Hi All

My car has a whine in 3rd gear.  All other gears seem to be fine and I presume that the 3rd gear may be worn more than the others.

Has anyone else had this before or a gearbox rebuild on an S3?

Thanks, Greg

Thanks for the offer, but I'll keep it for the moment :-).

The noise is only in 3rd gear and I think between 2k-4k rpm.   I figure that the 3rd gear cog is worn a little I guess it would cost 2k or more to fix, the Audi dealership noted it when it went for a service but didn't say that it needed instant attention.

It will be your 3rd gear syncro that is the problem, i had it with my corolla a few years back.
ended up cost a whole $380 to fix as the found bearing for 1st gear synchro was naffed.

Do talk to the gearbox shop in penrose. I can remember there pyshical address. but i know there just up the road from Qaulitat.

the fixed me car and had it back on the road in 4 days. And it was suppose to go thru car warranty too. So i think that is pretty good.

Hope this helps.

I took the car to a gearbox specialist and apparently the whine isn't too bad and a rebuild could be in the order of up to $3k if a 3 gear kit is need as is likely.

Apparently it could be 16hrs to take the Gearbox off and on.  Hard to know how the expensive warranty that I bought might cover it given it isn't actually broken ...  :(

it is 8 hours to remove a gearbox and refit in an S3 - i know as giltraps have done it twice on my car getting the clutch uprated.

Insurance probably won't cover this as they will most likely use the "normal wear and tear" escape clause. Syncros don't generally "break" and they are more likely to fail due to wear or abuse.

the main dealers will be able to give you a fixed price to repair, and while it may sound high, they will stick to it.

Just keep driving it. We have an 85 coupe gt that has a whine in third from being driven so hard and its been fine for the las 5 years and we haven't driven it any lighter

So, on the dealerships suggestion I put off the gearbox and now its an issue and there is swarf in the g'box oil.  It looks like I need 3rd and 5th gears as they have broken down, plus bearings/seals and I guess the clutch done at the same time. Who would have thought the gears would wear out in an Audi at 150,000 odd kms. I was thinking of upgrading to a Passat 2.0T or A4 1.8T but I after I do this work I guess I have to keep it a bit longer ... bugger!

The gearbox has finally been rebuilt along with being fitted with a new clutch and I should have it back tomorrow or the next day.  Who would have thought the rebuild would mean almost 5 weeks of the car being off the road. What is scary is the cost percentage of the work done and the current value of the car.

warranty covered it in the end?

About 65% which is better than nothing I guess, otherwise the bill was getting onto close to half the value of the car!

Its a worry how servicing / replacement costs can get up so quickly.  I thought that Audi's were built to high standards and I am disappointed to have a gearbox require a rebuild at moderate kms.
