PROJECT CAR: 9A mk2 golf
« on: August 03, 2008, 05:57:30 PM »
Right I thought it was about time I started a new thread for the project since ive been already working on it for the last 2 weeks taking pics whilst I go. Just so people can see the difference when its finished. my golf is a 1987 3dr 1.8 auto CI very tidy body with no rust anywhere (yet!)

Day one.
It was about time I gave up on getting the 4 door running as I really cant be bothered sorting the timeing out right now specialy when I wanna be caning round in the 3 dr! so I wheeled the 4 door out onto the drive and pushed the passat in for some gutting!

I started by ripping the front end off and taking the rad and pumps off the front end.

Every clip , wire and plug I took off something I labeled with something like

After a day or two of taking things apart we had everything off the engine and were able to start unbolting the subframe so we could drop it onto the floor

My brother came up with a brilliant lazy way of moving the engine away from the shell. It consisted of 3 spray cans and a piece of wood :p

Worked a treat so we moved the engine out of the way for now and started working on the loom in the engine bay.

Friday came with a day in aucks to do a photoshoot for work and whilst I was up there I went and picked up a early xmas present :p

Woot! 40mm drop to go in when I get the shocks sorted 

I gave up on the loom today and started on the dash and engine. I took off the subframe from the engine and left it in the corner with the auto box bolted on im gonna sort the engine out soon with a general clean up and a manual gbox.

The dash started out like this

And since im gonna try put it in the golf for a change of face its now like this

Now im at abit of a lull now with no idea where to start on the loom  and stuck with my shock inserts so I ask these 2 questions for abit of help from the knowledgable

1.   where do I start with the loom if I wanna put the dash in aswell as the engine

2.   where can I get the locking rings for my koni’s so I can put them in my struts

It is a big job to fit the dash, don't do it unless you are really confident and are a pretty good mechanic and have the time.
Anyway you can always fit the dash later after you have time to think about it more.
With the loom you go to the ECU and then follow the wires from there and take all that connects to the ECU. im pretty sure tha passats have a very good separate loom for the ecu and engine making it far easier than the mk3 gti loom I'm doing which goes here there and everywhere and has the immobilizer key and black box and vag com wires etc.
Does the passat do the vagcom?
You often have to unwind the loom tape to seperate the engine loom from the rest.
if you want you can do the 9A swap the easy way with a saab dizzy and then you dont need to do any loom at all.
you do know about that way too don't you?
The passat loom only does a wee bit anyway advancing and retarding for varying grades of petrol, who needs it really.

dont bother with the saab dizzy, it does not give you enough advance, and is a mission to find... also, was your car K-jet or digi? if it was digi, then the saab dizzy with k-jet will be a waste, as the pump creates half as much pressure as needed to open the injector...

I say keep the mk2 dash.... but if you want the passat dash, then swap everything over.... every wire, EVERYTHING!!!! :)

Well digi is the full EFI whilst K-jet is the old mechanical injection.
Forget the dash but do do the engine side of the loom and ecu so you can run the standard dizzy as what nigel says sounds right.
Its not that hard to fit the loom.

Like BB says the engine loom should not be too hard to fit, It seperates out from the rest of the loom very easily. I kept my existing loom for oil pressure switches, starter and coolant temp etc, just used the passat loom for all the engine running stuff.

Once it has been seperated out, identify the wires required to be patched into the fuse box and patch them in, then plug all the bits in on the engine side.. Well thats what I did anyways..... :)

Make sure to grab the wiring for the diagnostic connectors before you bin the passat body also.

It runs from a plug near the fuse box (which plugs into the engine loom) along the drivers side sill to under the gear selector where there are several two pin plug connectors, blue, black and white ones can see them in one of your pics.

Having the diagnostic connectors can be helpfull, you can easily read the fault codes with an LED if you have any problems once it's up and running.

Two things on the wiring:

1. Keep everything!
2. Don't cut any wires until you have it all running nicely.

You can always cut stuff out later :)
