I think RobH was working on a deal. It's expensive.

And it's even more now, prices went up 10% a couple of months ago, due to the importers increased shipping costs, etc.

Well I ended up going for Fuchs Titan Super GTO 10w40 instead since I couldnt find Motul anywhere in Hawkes Bay.
The Fuchs so Im told is a fully synthetic oil.

There's synthetic and then there's synthetic.

Most Synthetic Oil on the market is simply man-made copies of mineral oil molecules.  The idea behind this is that you get more 'consistency' between oil molecules so they all act together at the same time.

There are some brands, Motul and Castrol R, that are based on 'novel' oil molecules that are unrelated to mineral oil molecules.  These have been specially formulated in labs and a lot of time and money has gone into them to ensure they are performing at the highest possible standard (hence the extra premium).

Not saying that normal synthetics are bad, its just that the 'novel' synthetics are better.

I dont know why you are so concerned with engine oil for your car Nik, just use 10W40 Valvoline engine oil.

I doubt that this engine has had any love for years, and still is good .

I also doubt that you will drive this car to within an inch of its life anyway, so just use a good engine oil and change it regularly.

Thats my advice

So have you put some bloody oil in it yet? :)

I can understand Nik,wanting to the right thing with his new toy, but to be obsessed with the right oil, when a car has done as many miles as his car has done, renders any new oil worthless.

Remember that what you eat today does not remedy what you have eaten all your life.

And that is what i said previously

Its all just lubrication some thinner and some thicker, some has more detergents and some has more stuff like whats in moreys or bitron or something to increase its stickyness and blah blah.
The more modern the engine the tighter the tolerances and gaps for the oil to get into hence you need a thinner oil.
Obviously one of your biggest problems with oil is if its too thin for your engine and oil pressure becomes an issue.
Race oils have additives specially added for sustained high temps and are expencive because they are boutique and have extra testing etc.
to be honest they perform probibly only 10% better than a normal oil. but if money is no object.
they are probibly not that good for normal driving anyway.
Just use the brand thats on special Nic.

I use to go for the expensive Formula R, now i just use the cheapest and change it regualarly... however i always go for the highest API rating.

viscosities dont affect my decision that much.

Yeah, these discussions always get very subjective. I would however say that the I5s seem to run smoother/quieter with some oils than others. If you're going to change oil 2 or 3 times a year just try a few out until you find one you like.

I just use whatever's cheap for oil and filter with the old Benz and change it often as it's 35 years old and the oil turns to black sludge pretty quick. In the S2 however the oil stays clear for a long time, ad I'm sticking to decent oil and OEM filters.

veedubman

hahah if you ever want to clear black sludge out of an engine

buy 6 bottles of that Cheap Shell Station Oil the 10 40w cheap crapo mineral oil

Change the Oil and Filter once a week for 6 weeks

engine will be clean and sparkly :P

Oh thats helpful ??? And what is vw502 00 when its at home?
Yes you can do lots of cheap changes to clean engines you can do flushes you could even run a diesel oil for a wee while as it has more detergents and holds the carbon in it better.
If your engine is old and has blow by in the rings your oil will dirty up.
The end is nigh, but the end of what is the question?

No problem. Stay with full synthetic.  RS2 (ADU) fill capacity is 4.5 ltr with filter.

Recommed that you fill to the volume above then check the dip stick and note level, remark line if necessary. This way you will not overfill engine.
