Is that Andrew Faucets old car ?

Yip, it is, what can you tell me about it? BTW, he wasnt the last owner.

Here is a plug in front of the airbox, shouldnt it be plugged into something?
Speaking of the airbox, it has a K&N replacement filter in it.

Is the diverter sound a kind of 'flutter' noise (hard to describe)? I've driven an RS2 with that noise and I don't think it's a big deal... probably just a result of more boost from the chipping, or perhaps a firmer wastegate spring fitted. I'f your lucky it may be a stronger aftermarket valve (factory items are prone to failure).

Does the car have a boost gague? That can be helpful if you are worried about pressure and/or leaks. The fact that the idle is good is encouraging: hopefully there are no inlet leaks.

Do check your tyre size: many RS2 owners make the mistake of fitting 245mm wide tryres, which do not really fit properly on the 7" rims (tyres look kind of wide in the photos). There was once a special tyre to fit these cars, but no longer available AFAIK. I think most RS2s would be on 225s now, or fitted with 8" rims.

Car looks way better in the pics than I expected! Replacement buttons and so on should be easy to source as they are common across most of the 90s Audi range.

Its a flutter noise, can make it as early as 2,300rpm, Dads car seemed to make a noise around 3,500rpm.

The car has no boost gauge and the intake pipes dont have factory clips holding them on which leads me to believe that they have been replaced once at least.

Tyre wise I remember the issues these cars have, the Dunlop 8000 that was designed for the car wasnt a true 245/40/17, my car is currently fitted with a 235/45/17. They seem way to big and are very close to rubbing on some suspension componates in the rear. Ill replace those with 225/40/17s (not a hard tyre to find). What are other RS2 owners using tyre wise?

The top vacuum pipe off the wastegate cap is missing, or do they not have one?? Not sure about the bolt like thing going in also, are they not sealed off there??

Usually you see a recessed allen key type arrangement. Homemade wastegate adjuster?...may be part of the equation for the 'flutter' noise.

Boy, you're going to have a whole heap of learning with this puppy  ;D

Nope - that vacuum connection off the wastegate should not have a pipe off it - not used in the RS2.

Yep - the wastegate screw looks odd - there should be a recess with an alen-key to wind it down (from the factory that is covered with some sort of gunk to stop you fiddling with it).

The flutter noise is (I think) the wastegate acctuator flicking the gate open to control boost.

Not sure what that connector is - will take a look.

I would guess that someone has been messing with boost control, but no idea exactly what's been done. You could measure manifold pressure while driving to see what kind of boost it's making, then try to work out what's been done.

Owners' mistake ?
Shouldn't that be factory mistake as RS2 were factory fitted with Dunlop SP8000 245/40-17s on a 7.0" wide rim.
Curious given the S2 had 205's on a 7.5" rim...

:D

The pic of the LH front wheel shows an Advan A-046D ?
They were a pretty decent tyre, standard fitment on Evo VII's.

That particular Dunlop has been replaced but Dunlop and others still make tyres in 245/40-17.

And what was that about an external wastegate ?
Verboten under Land Transport rules.

As far as I understand things, that particular Dunlop fitted OK on 7" rims, but more modern 245 tyres will risk the bead pulling off the rim.

The wastegate is internal, and controlled by an actuator and an 'overide' spring. It's normal to wind the spring down to hold boost.

ANyone know what that plug is? It looks like it's around where the diverter valve sits.

well if you look directly to the Right of that plug there is your Boost Control Valve its supposed to be plugged in to that..

That is what I saw also, but thought that may be too simple :D

Car is looking good Nik - will have to come and have a nosey somtime...

i think mr Oily is getting a External waste gate mixed up with a screamer pipe (ie a waste gate that vents direct to atmosphere without mufflering and not out the back of the car)

This is a external wastegate it is a flange fitted item i.e. not cast as part of the turbine housing

this is a internal wastegate a wastegate flap (usually a ceramic disc of sorts) is open/shut by a very small vaccum diphram actuator most modern factory turbo cars have these now (cost cutting space saving what ever)

my guess its been unplugged as someone has probably put a el cheapo bleed screw to make it boost higher... hrmmm

Yeah - the evidence seems to point to someone trying to play with the boost control: I think worst case scenario is that the wastegate valve ends up doing all the work. It would be worthwile taking a look at the boost profiles at high revs.

To do that I guess I need a boost gauge?

Also, where is the VAGCOM plug in the car?

I guess this is just a standard B4 question.
How do I get the window switch back into place? Do I have to take the whole door card off or does the door handle surround pop off to access it?
