"Safe" oil pressure

Well, finally hooked up the oil pressure gauge and got my mechanic mate to double check everything. Turned it on and it runs at 80psi and can get up to 100psi which he said was quite high. Is this high for a 1.8t??

Normal ,just normal pressure on the 1.8t in fact normal for most of the VW 4 cyl market

my 2.0l 8v is 100psi on start up and when hot at idle its about 60 and 80 hot when under load. so yours is normal

put thicker oil in see how high you can get it

Sweet. Thought so, but it is best to check these things.

If your oil pumps relief valve ever jams from engine swarf it will pump the oil so high it will burst out the side of the filter.

Should never happen, oil pump has a 175psi relief valve and the oil filter housing has a 85psi relief valve.
Even if the oil pump one jams the other should still relieve exess pressure.

happened to my mk1 or I wouldn't be talking bout it The thrust bearing wore out and the crank started grinding up and filled the sump full of swarf and thats what it did light came on and oil everywhere, tryed to tighten the filter then replaced the filter happened again.
Had just used a free oil change voucher somebody had given me so i blamed them and they got it all towed in and then they fitted the 2nd filter and it did it again so they made me pay for the tow truck and extra oil and filter and time and even tried to rip me for some brake fluid and other stuff that i said I wouldn't pay for so they offered me a punch in the head just to top the whole day off i felt a real winner.
