As far as cheap to build and maintain, I would have thought an upgrade such as 9a, tuned 2.0L 8v, ABF etc might not really be much more expensive because it all fits first pop. I've never worked on Hondas so this might be rubbish, but bit more fabrication/non standard parts / time I would have thought? I haven't found VW parts that expensive if you look around and are doing the work yourself. My mitsi cost me more to maintain than my golfs have.
But I suppose if you already have the parts, plus it will be cool to have a vtec golf!
