Had loads of Astras and fords in our shop with all sorts of stupid problems. All modern euro cars are s**t, if I wanted a good reliable car I would buy a $10K subaru or toyota or nissan that is about 2000 or 2001 at the latest before all the crap and dealer only stuff starts to really bite on them.
Ive heard even the modern corrollas are chewing up CV joints and gearboxes before warrantee is up.

What about the trusty Honda Accord Torneo Euro R? Not a hatch back but roomy, dead reliable, cheap and sporty.

The late 90s toyota wagons are pretty good, I have a manual 96 BZ touring Carib (black top 4age) and its a great machine, Good power at around 165bhp, good size for the family, easy and fun to drive, costs bugger all to run (from hastings to auckland with 3 big people in the car and air con on the whole way was only 31L) We got a good deal on ours, Mint condition with only 84,000km on clock and only cost us $5500.

Couldnt ask for better value for a family car than that, fun and fast, safe with abs, dual airbags etc and cheap as chips, its up to 110,000km now and hasnt missed a beat at all.

An NZ new Swift Sport with the balance of a new car warranty or you could get a new Swift 1.5 SR4 Limited Edition for 21K.

The swifts are great! I was comissioned by my mother to find her a new car and after driving alot of similar cars it was the swift i told her to get, she has had it for about 3 years now and still loves it, might not be big enough as a family car tho. If you do get one the swift sport is great, or the swift ltd edition that comes on alloys, spot lights and a better sound system. Problem is that they hold value second hand really well, Like only a thou or two between used and new...

They are meant to be pretty amazing machines, but might be out of reach budget wise at the moment, although im sure i saw one on a yard in hastings around 23k

My old man had one as a rental in the uk and really raved about it when he got home, said the torque was amazing from it

Would go for a Mk5 over Mk4.
What about a Mazda 3? Any good?
Being a somewhat biased Mazda owner myself, I'd say you couldn't get better value for moneythan a Mazda 3/SP23 or a Mazda 323 Astina/SP20.

Run forever, cheap to run and fix, plenty around, good looking and a fun drive.
