Tales of a small group of sport quattro's being held back by the factory are not new. I'm still not convinced of it's authenticity.
Why? I have a picture of Walter R being gifted a sport quattro in the early '90's by the company. The story with the picture (in VW/Audi Driver) describes how the car was built from factory parts left over from the production run. If they held back some cars, how come they had to "build" one for Herr Rohrl?
Saying that though - I'd still love to have that one in the shed.......

Back when I started my aprenticeship we had a red one in for service it's the only genuine road going one i've seen. Onlythe one tech was allowed to touch it and it wasn't allowed to be left outside.

Myth... never was one.

As for the 5 white cars sold circa ' 88 they are referenced in the Audi quattro book referred to on the 'Cars for sale' site by VIN number.

Hmm, my brother-in-law was insistent he saw one in Auckland back in the mid-eighties, described it accurately and I had no reason to doubt him. Then again, he is a one eyed Alfa fanatic....

Is that in the Jeremy Walton Book, "Audi quattro"?

No its in reference to a limited edition book entitled 'Audi Sport quattro'  written by Jurgen Lewandowski. Only 2500 printed published by Sudwest art & car edtion .  This author also has written exclusively on  Porsche 959,  Ferrari GTO, M/Benz 300 SL.

The quattro book has a forward written by none other than Ferdinand Piech himself.  Book covers history of the models development from Ur quattro, sport quattro to S1 and has high quality illustration of the cars and events.  Each book also contains a copy of the 1985 San Remo pace notes as used by Christian Geistdorfer.

Any way.... the book contains all the vin numbers of every Sport quattro assembled and which market they were sent to or which were used for motorsport activity.  It details the 5 cars that were destined for motorsport parts allocation but rebuilt and sold in Sept '88  chassis numbers 030,060,080,171,175.    Prior to this all cars had been assembled and sold between 1984-86.
The last two cars were in white body colour which aligns with the car for sale at present.

The 959 was left hand drive which was an issue in the day to get road legal in '88. There was no sport quattro which again was only available in LHD.
