They are making a 3 door Mk6 Golf, very much doubt we will see it in NZ though...

Is there really enough of a market to bring brand new 3 doors into NZ, nowadays?

EMD believe not, most people want a 5 door and the majority wins unfortunately, to be fair Suzuki is the same int the UK you could only get the Swift sport in 3 dr but over here they only sell the 5dr. Not sure on other manufacturers can you get the focus or Astra in 3dr?

The Astra SRi Turbo is 3 door only... don't see many of those around though

In the UK and Europe I'd say the majority of the high performance hatches are bought in 3dr form.
Kiwi's must just be too practical lol.

Just seems dumb after they couldnt sell enough of the Edition 30's in the end to bring in 3 door hot golfs when sirocco is in 3 door form. Bear in mind they have bought in the S3 in 5 door and DSG. Smart move i reckon. They are super dumb if they dont bring in the hot golf 6 in 5 door. People with kids want them!

I think the 3dr vs 5dr argument is valid, Hennie. Kiwis don't have a love affair with 3dr cars any more.

aside from 4wd though the R32 is pretty average performance-wise. the ed.30 wastes it, and with a few little tuning mods etc its not even in the same league. Not really sure why people loved the R32 so much. Dont get me wrong , pretty cool car, but perhaps the marketing dept for VW ed.30 was a bit slow and didnt actually know what thy were selling. Marketing it as a 3 door golf with 25 odd more bhp was not a true reflection of what you were buying. The engine kit alone to change a Gti to an Edition 30 spec is $10k. Forged internals K04 etc etc. The edition 30 is more a 2wd,  and better specd S3 (based on engine and box), than a rival for the R32. Just my thoughts on it anyway.

Which is exactly how they should've marketed it...as it stood, I didn;t even realise it was that special, to be honest.

I thought it was a warmed up GTi with some nice badges.

indeed, and to be honest EMD and giltrap/conti etc didnt know and really still dont know what they are selling. Sad really!
Our edition 30 is already over 300 bhp and to be honest damn quick, Soon to be around 350 bhp and 450 Nm , and that from a 2.0 with a K04 is pretty neat.
My evo 9 (ill stop swearing soon) was less than 400 Nm and was fast as all hell. Surprisingly the ed. 30 does get the power down well. Rarely see the traction light unless you fang it in first, but i must admit second and third are the fun ones.
