Hmm the S4 would be a good idea...

i may have found one.

2001, done 110k, had the cambelt, waterpump and alternator just changed.

- what would having to change the aternator and waterpump indicate about the rest of the car?
2000 S4, MTM stage 1, Oettinger RE's, Bilstein Sports, Vogtland springs, H&R Swaybars, DBA 4000 rotors, EBC Yellow stuff pads, 710N DV's, F1 tints, RS4 clutch

Being a 2001, you have the very latest of the B5. the early B5 S4's (1999) has a few design issues.

Get it mechnically checked out to ensure the water pump didnt cook anything. Check the service record with CCS/Giltraps for more info.

If you do take it, buy it with a warranty, or put an after market warranty on it. S4's out of warranty can be very expensive.

Budget for new H&R suspension too.

i know, i'm  a little suspicious. but will check it out.

where's the best place to get a mechanical check?
it was serviced at giltraps so they'd have a good idea of it's history, but they're a bit 'spency eh.
there might be a benefit of getting ccs to give it a check, fresh eyes etc. still not cheap, but cheaper than buying a lemon.

Firstly look at it,and take it for a drive. Dont be afraid to rev it, and push it a little. ( I said a little !!, no need to get a ticket or piss the owner off)
2nd, I would ask for the service record from Giltraps or ask the owners permission to get this.
3rd. You need an inspection. CCS or Giltraps could do a precheck, but AA is probably better in some aspects even though they are not Audi experts.

IMHO , an AA check ain't much good for something this sophisticated.
I had an experience a few years ago, buying a Audi90 Quattro 2.2, when the AA expert told me the 'tappets are a bit noisey' on startup. Yes I said , they are, and smiled, realising I'd wasted my money. The dealer's on the other hand were only too happy to come up with a long list of things requiring attention.
Get the dealer to do it, an S4 will be remembered by those that have worked on it. They have nothing to gain or loose if they are not selling it. And oh yes, the longest warranty you can get, I owned a Coupe that cost nothing for 5 years, now I have an S2 thats perfect but costs a fortune to keep that way. Warranty has saved me thousands over the last 20 months, the 'Brake Bomb' being a recent highlight.

If you are buying from an Audi dealer, yes, demand silver circle. If they wont, or if its not an Audi Dealer, get the 3rd party warranty option from an Audi Dealer.

When my 01 A4TQM ran out of warranty, they wouldnt sell be Silver Circle (only goes with 2nd hand cars they are selling), but could sell the lower spec insurance warranty. Not quite as good, but better than nothing. 9 months later, turbo failure. I considered it a very good investment !

right, thought so.

it's being sold privately.

i got a 3rd party warranty on my current audi, janssen or something.  haven't had to use it so don't know how good they are.

Recommend you consider purchasing the 3rd party warranty from your audi dealer. This way, as much as it isnt an audi warranty, they feel obliged to make it work for you.

Take my advice and don't ever go through Janssen. It's a one-woman operation, and she just happens to be the rudest person in the entire world. I had to claim a number of times on my Subaru, and getting them to do anything was an absolute nightmare. Just thinking about it makes me break out in a cold sweat!  :P

Autosure is the one I have for the S2. I've not had to deal directly with them, the dealer did it all. I've had three claims and from my pov there's been no problems, all good.

that other one i posted up in trading post has come down in price by 10k, so that makes things interesting.

2000, 66km chipped - $38k

2001, 110km, standard - $35k ono

am i right in saying that the 2001 would have ESP and the 2000 wouldn't?

and i'd have to change the cambelt on the 2000 in a year or 2 (how much would that be? ballpark?)

Wow I'm glad I sold my one when I did- They've certainly dropped in price over the last 6 months!

I would get the 2000 one. You don't get ESP or chrome mirrors, but the kms make the difference. It would be hard to sell one in a few years with kms over 150k IMO.
