Hi there,

I currently have a leak in the rear passengers footwell (possibly there since I have owned it as I haven't had it for very long)

I'm unable to locate where the water is coming from, as it doesn't look to be coming from the door or windows. It seems to be coming up from underneath the floor somewhere, and it only happens when I drive the vehicle in the wet.

Is there a common fault that mk4's have in regards to leaking like this? Also are the any key areas I should be checking underneath the car, places it could be getting in etc?

I'm actually pretty shocked that this is happening in such a late model car :(

Cheers,

Fraser

Yes the vehicle is parked outside, sometimes on a very small angle front end facing up.

It seems to only be getting wet when I drive the vehicle?

Yes I have had a look at this one. However my leak seems to only been in that one area of the floor, and there is no water anywhere inside the front of the vehicle.

Are there any bungs in the rear left hand side floor?

FraserNZ

So does the water still come from the front (even though there is no sign of water in the front) and end up in the end of the backseat left side floorwell?

Sorry whats a rain tray?

no sunroof

will check the boot tonight, didn't think to look there.

cheers,

FraserNZ

FraserNZ

Oh yes and one more thing... My car is about 90mm off the ground, so could that be pushing water up anywhere it shouldn't be?

(all certified may I add)

If the car is sitting facing up hill water could be running from the front to the back under the carpet and pooling in the rear?
Also, does the rear squirter on a Mk4 have its own water bottle?

The pollen filter covers get broken/left off quite often allowing water in at the front.

Washer pipe joins can come apart but you dont normally get thet much water.

The window regulator panels can leak where they seal to the door if they have been badly fitted/damaged.

The drain holes in the plenum chamber can become blocked allowing water to build up and leak through the pollen filter.

Its doubtful that the water is entering from below.

Yup, check your rain tray by removing your wipers and then pulling away the plastic that sits along the bottom of the window.

Most likely you will find it full of crap (leaves, twigs etc etc) which will be clogging where it drains.   The issue i had though was that the white box on the drivers side, where all the electrical went through, the lip was not sealed.   I can only assume that the rain train was over flowing into this box which would soak all my carpets.

Check that this box is sealed tight.   Also check the pollen filter as sometimes gunk can get caught in here and cause it to overflow into the cabin also.

Hope that helps...

FraserNZ

Thanks for the response mate,

I will check the rain tray over the weekend. Also, how do I go about checking the pollen filter?

Cheers,

Fraser

coons

You will find the pollen filter under the rain tray. You will know it when you see it, just pull it out and give it a shake and vacuum etc to get all the crap out. Or just buy a new one if it's really bad
