Top Gear UK did a four car "what if you don't get a 911 in a recession?" test;

Focus RS;
Mini John Cooper Works;
FIAT 500 Abarth;
Golf Mk6 GTI.

Focus, best handling, interior "free of any lateral thinking"
Abarth, should make Mini dealers worried
Mini, very good cross country

Golf, initilly feels boring, confortable and slick; "where you fight the RS, you get in the flow with the GTI.  Indeed, the Golf drops the boring face and suddenly makes you grin like a mental"

winner? the GTI "If you need to replace a 911 with something a lot cheaper, a decent chunk of kudos and a wholly exceptional breadth of driving ability then it still has all the bases covered.  Who needs a 911 anyway?"

oily

Latest issue of UK CAR (August 2009) also has a GTI Mk6 comparo.

Continuing the "911 of hot hatches" label they gave the car, they concluded...

GTI Mk6 = 911 Carrera

Focus RS = 911 Turbo

Megane R26R = 911 GT3

"The Carrera is all you ever really need, but the further you climb the ladder, the bigger the buzz, the bigger the bill."

They also got Andy Gulden to run the cars around the 'Ring.

GTI  8:54.6sec

Focus RS  8:47.1

Megane R26R  8:42.6

Apparently there are plenty of unsold (from a pool of 240) R26R's in the UK, maybe some will make it out here ?

RS4

Those times must be dissapointing for Ford. When the R series golf arrives, it will smoke the Ford big time round the ring. poor old ford :)

Things are only getting worse for the fast Ford.

Now it's getting hassled by little Renault Clios.

In that photo the two door golf looks way better than the scirocco!

That picture is awesome.

It looks like the Scirocco is leaning forward snarling at the Golf, like it wants to eat it.

it also looks like the Scirocco isn't any lower than the Golf, it's just got slitty windows!

Bad photo for demonstrating the height difference isn't it...

Nose to nose under spring skies a few things jump out, chiefly the Scirocco?s higher ride height and the Golf?s more overt sportiness.

HandsomeDan

I don;t think it helps that he edges of the photo are distorted.

I cant even tell which is which ??? Golf on left I guess but they look damn similar. I like the golf most.
The end is nigh, but the end of what is the question?

The scirocco is really just a mk6 golf with a few bits squashed up to make it look different.
And why are they comparing the gti with a scirocco? I thought they were only a 2.0 or 1.4.

I'm not too sure now, I thought it was a 2 liter non turbo.

edit; you're right, it does have the same engine as the gti. oops.

The Golf use an evolution version of the TSI 2.0 litre rated at 210PS (207bhp) the Scirocco uses the standard 200PS (197bhp) Mk5 GTI engine.

I get the feeling I should probably know these things.
