Being that I have barely driven anywhere in the old girl apart from a 2km drive to work an back in the past 9 months, and the temp gauge barely having time to register, I'm not actually sure what a "normal" temp reading should be ???
Took it for a squirt around some of the back roads yesterday, including a long uphill stretch where in theory it should have been pulling max vacuum advance and the gauge got up to around 105-110 degrees.
Came back into town and over the last few Km and including a 10min idle period in the drive, the temp didnt drop off past 105.
The thermo fan is working, so I'm just double checking to make sure that everything is as it should be :)

Cheers mate :)

Just though I'd check... In an S110/120L the difference between 105 and 110 was usually a blown head gasket or a warped head ::)

Hmmm, over a 100 would be a concern I think.  ???

Did you check the thermostat?
Yep, checked a couple of times and it definately gets a wide-on when it gets hot :P

I think 90-100 will be "normal".  There's actually two thermo switches which came with these cars, as far as I'm aware.  One activates the low speed fan at just under 90 degree and the high at just over (94 degrees or something) and the other switch, the low speed only comes on above 90 degrees and the high speed at 99ish degrees.  I've rigged my fan to always be on now so even in heavy traffic on a hot day it sits around 95 degrees...  I replaced the thermostat so it opens and closes and keeps the engine warm when driving on really cold nights, as it used to run close to 80 degrees on the open road in the middle of winter.

You can wear your fan out running it all the time. Better to have it switched.
The end is nigh, but the end of what is the question?

But the temp in the radiator the temp for the gauge are different I thought.. the gauge one is measured at the head?

Mine used to run 102deg... and i thought that was too close to boiling.. well over boiling but add the pressure still close to boiling. So Ive taken the old crappy massive fan thing off got a wee electric slimline and just run the ran the whole time.. haven't had any issues so far and now the motor sits right on 92.7 and don't move.. was watching on a data log few days ago  :)

*shrug* I dunno.  The temp gauge for the dash is def at the head so yeah i have no idea what temp the water would be going into the radiator.  probably well over 100 degrees, yeah.  But we are talkin about the gauge temp right?  Anything over the 100 degrees mark on that would ring alarm bells for me!  I remember when my thermoswitch died for the first time.  sitting in auckland city traffic at 105 was freaky :P  Just wanted to get the car moving!

That's too hot. The engine can handle it OK but it's still too hot. My KV Cq has done the last 3 trackdays without going over 95deg.  Comes up to temp and stays there. As the fans are working fine I'd look at the radiator care, get it cleaned if not already. There are different thermostats too, 87deg and 93deg.  I'm using an 87deg one, opens just that bit sooner. Souds like the temp sender is working fine as it reads ok. Like 5-pot said too, get a lower temp thermoswitch as 105-110 is too hot if you're at speed.  Pottering in traffic with aircon going then its OK for a short time.

Alfashark

Hmmm yep, thats odd alright...  ???
It has an 87deg thermostat in there, which is verified as functioning correctly, the thermo switch for the fan is coming on at about 85-87deg on the guage, and is hooked up the right way ;)
Rad has been checked and flushed by a radiator specialist after it sprang a leak due to the bottom mounts collapsing...

On another note, I was in Putaruru yesterday and a sweet red Type 81 Audi 80 hummed past.  Couldn't see if it was a quattro or not.  Know the car?

Alfashark

Yep, not a Quattro.. its a 4cyl Sport :)
I've left a "spotted" tag under the wipers, needs some serious TLC on the body, but it runs sweetly.
