Future Classics

If you wanted to invest in a future classic car what would you want to puchase and put away?
What do you think is at the bottom of its price cycle?

I think the early hot hatches - mk1 gti and mk2 16v, and the pug 205 gti, mk1 fiat uno turbo, are all pretty good buying at the moment.
1983 T25 Microbus - keep forever, never finish
1988 mk2 Golf 2L 16v - work in progress
1999 mk4 Golf GTI - simple mods

I think a standard R32 GTR like this one:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Nissan/Skyline/auction-275001123.htm

They cant ever be worth less than 19.5K surely?

Also a manual 190E 2.3 16V Cosworth. Can be purchased for less than 12.5K.

Does the 350SLC qualify?  I prefer the long wheelbase and hard top.

Seriously though... any 'classic' really needs to have some sort of race history unless it has some really unique features (eg; RS2, the only Audi+Porsche). So I would suggest the 500SLC in rally spec...

Great question for debate

Cars with rally heritage. E,g, Clean original
- Nissan Pulsar GTI-R (especially an original 1990 RB in off white)
- Mazda 323/Familia BFMR or GTR/GTAE
- Subaru Legacy RSRA
- Mitsubishi Galant VR4 RS or Evo 0 (and I would also argue Evos I-III as well if you can still find any good ones)
- Daihatsu Charade GTti
- Toyota Celica ST165 and ST185 GrpA/Sainz Editions

Sports cars/soft tops
- Original early (NA model) Mazda MX5s
- Series 4-5 RX7s (earlier model rotaries are already worth big dollars so not including those)
- BMW E36 cabriolets, especially M3

Other random models
- BMW E36 M3s, and probably 325/328s manuals to a lesser extent
- Nissan R31 and R32 Skylines - GTRs will obviously be popular but I think good GTST and GTS4 models will appreciate over. Think modern Datsun 1600
- VW Golf VR6s and probably GTIs as well as they get scarcer.
- Honda Integra TypeRs
- Early model Toyota Hiace vans

Mk1 and Mk2 Gti
URQ
Audi RS2 ....blub blub blub
Integrale
Honda Type R
AE86 Toyota
and Sierra Cosworth

I think the best investment is to pick the car that people will seek to purchase on retirement, saying "I always wanted one of those back in the day", or "I wish Id never sold it" mentality. Look at GTHOs in Aussie right now. Booming global economy helped as well

Seriously though, I think modern cars (post 60s) just don't have the amazing custom coachwork of the 20, 30s and 50s to make the amazing values that some of those cars do today. Names like Zagato, Giha, Bertone, Allemano, Sallot and the like. Pininfarina the only true survivor that has its designs regularly reach production today.

I looked at importing a 1960s Zagato bodied Fiat 750 (double bubble) from Aussie in the mid 90s, that was listed for 7k with blown engine a but just didnt have the cash. They sell for 10x that now.

all the 5-cylinder S cars.  Many of them will be 20+ years old in 5 years time.

Mk3 Golf VR6's too I reckon.

PS nothing like a good global recession or crisis to pick up cheaper cars. During ww2 Bentleys and Bugatis were unable to be driven due to fuel shortages, unable to be fixed due to lack of parts and skilled engineers to fix them. A lot were broken up for metal recycling, and some even used a roling blocks on roads!

late 60's-early '70s Aston DBS - around $50k will pick up a nice one but excellent buying and definitely a future classic of note and a stylish drive.

Ditto 930 Porsches, Integrale, maybe The Lotus Elise/Exige.

The Fleet:
Orange Roughy:'90 16v Corrado
The Little Tank: '93 2.8l 100 Quattro
'89 Carrera 4.
Still trying to figure out how to get 'em all to fit in a single garage....
