I think a standard R32 GTR like this one:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Nissan/Skyline/auction-275001123.htm

They cant ever be worth less than 19.5K surely?

I've been watching this one - not exactly cheap, but certainly a classic.

The other question that fits in is, what will financially perform better than current classics for the same or less money? I went past a Datsun today; same model I bought for $300 when I was a teenager as my first car and thought was too slow, too ugly and nothing more than cheap wheels. I kid drove by in one today fully kitted out and with at least the retail equivalent of $10k sunk into it.

Cars with rally heritage. E,g, Clean original
- Mitsubishi Galant VR4 RS or Evo 0 (and I would also argue Evos I-III as well if you can still find any good ones)

Why not an Evo V? There were a few of them around but they are getting fewer and fewer, and to find a standard one is getting harder too. I am lead to believe that there won't be any more landing on out shores because their now too old
An Evo V, X and 6.5 would be my pick

- Early model Toyota Hiace vans

How early? I have a 1988 Hiace does that count?

Very .... but how much would it appreciate in value over the next 5 years relative to a Mk1 Lotus Cortina?

Why not an Evo V?

I've no doubt all Evo's will appreciate at some stage. However I don't think Evo V's (2nd Gen) prices have bottomed out as yet and also Evos I-III will always be the "original Evo" kind of like a Mk1 Golf GTI will always be the original GTI - therefore I'd argue in future they'll always be more collectable than later Evos and the first to really start appreciating in value.

Exactly, commercial vehicles all get used to death and then one day you turn around and there's almost none left. I keep thinking of Kombi's - 20-30 years ago would anyone have thought a Kombi would go for $100K?

Wow thats cherry, you should have bought that Phil. Apple green too.

Should have at Y350,000 - not so keen now it's back at Y880,000 starting bid  :-\

The Hiace is awesome. Mate of mine had a 3 liter turbo diesel one. Thing was easy to drive and had heaps of grunt. 3rd gear skids easy!  :D

I think the fd RX7 is well on its way to being a future classic. Plenty of limited edition ones spread around. Standard ones are already sought after.

Agreed. I think Japanese tuning companies could be the collector  cars of the future. Tomi, kakamoto, nismo shop modified cars. Wild moda and lots of power.
