I don't know if this is common knowledge or not, but in my search for a manual for the Polo I came across this:
https://erwin.volkswagen.de/erwin/showHome.doIts basically a full online version of the VW service system and has complete breakdown, step-by-step instructions for everything you could possibly want to do for your car. On top of this, it also has some great background reading and interesting schematics top show you how different systems work.
It has all cars including early VW stuff right through to the very latest cars. Its the genuine VW site, so all info is up to date.
You pay a flat fee (21Euros) for a days access including the ability to print. I spent 2 hours printing almost the whole lot for the Polo. If you have a PDF printer application (like cutePDF) you can also save them as a file for future reprints.
Hope this helps people in the future.
