Am looking to buy a Mk IV Golf. Have had a V5 Tipo in the past. Must be a 5 door. So, do I go for a 1.8 or 2.0 and turbo or not. Don't know how reliable the turbos are in the IV's. Other option is a Polo GTI (used). Any comments appreciated.

Hi buddy,

I have a 1.8T MKIV 5dr GTi Golf. Ask away if you like! As for reliability, I think if you get one that as been well looked after and not thrashed around then you shouldn't have any trouble. As with most cars, if its looked after well then you'll be ok.

Is your GTI a Jap import, or NZ new.

Jap import unfortunately. Watchout if you got a europlate...it won't fit in the slot on the back bumper!

I will be sticking with standard NZ plate. How do you find the performance? I am needing to sell my present car as my marriage has just ended and it is my current car or a house, but not both.

Performance is pretty good. Definately not a slug. I think I read somewhere you had a V5? I drove a V5 Golf a while ago now, I reckon the V5 is smoother, but up and go is pretty much level. There are plenty of performance options if you wanted more up and go  :)

Yes, I did have a V5, but sold it earlier this year. I now have a Mk V GTI, but it has to go so I can buy a house.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that.

Note though that a standard MKIV GTi is only 150BHP, where as a MKV GTi is nearly 150KW or about 200BHP. So thats a fairly significant difference too.

In the last couple of years they increased power to 180hp.  If you could find one that would probably be your best bet

A V5 would use a lot more gas that a 1.8T.

Although the late model ones are hard to come by too. I remember seeing a couple of late model GTi's at Giltrap, but I don't think there were many. Haven't seen a late model imported Golf GTi here either. Most are 1998 - 2003 era. Volkswagen NZ/EMD replaced the GTi for the V5 range hence the rarity of the late model GTi (I'm pretty sure thats rite anyway, correct me if i'm wrong!).

The V5 I had was a good car, but didn't like the tipo gearbox. Also a bit soft in the handling. I thought the V5 was reasonably quick off the line and it had a very nice sound to it, But the new GTI is on a totally different level. Performance, handling ....  everything is better. But at least I have had it for 6 months. In a couple of years I should be able to get back up to new again.

I also asked about a Polo GTI (about 2000 model), but no one has commented on them. Had one out from the local VW dealer here in Wellington, and I quite liked it. Does anyone know much about them?

I am going to have somewhere around $16 - $18k to play with.

I think it depends on where the car has come from, ive seen a few mk4 GTis with euro bumpers around, but yes, most seem to have the Jap/US spec bumpers which is a bummer!

Hong Kong, Singapore and NZ new cars have the euro plate size bumpers.

We have a Mk4 Gti. It will a great reliable runner, with enough pep to remain fun. Save the house, in the current market if prices keep rising you will be able to get a 2nd hand Mk 5 in a couple of years with no further outlay.

I almost bought a Polo GTI, never drove it though as it was in a Auction in Auckland.
Its one car Id like to have a drive of. Ive covered alot of kms in standard Polos, they were a bit of a laugh.

Depending where in the country you are, house prices have levelled out alot. It will be interesting to see what will happen in the next 6 months.

While living in the UK we had a V5 Golf and a Polo GTi as company cars.  The Polo had a very light clutch and power steering, aimed towards the female driver I thought.  It felt quite skittish on/near the limit too, perhaps a function of its light weight (compared to my V5).  I always preferred the Golf, much more comfortable and refined, if not quite as much fun to throw around or as racy to look at.

I agree. If you want something that is a bit more comfortable and more spacious then go with the Golf.
