Window Regulator
« on: May 05, 2010, 10:40:39 am »
I think the passenger side front window regulator has decided to give up the ghost in my ex's mk3 GTI, dont suppose anyone would have one kicking around would they?

The motor sounds to be trying to work but the window doesnt move and is jammed in place, cant manually lift or drop it!
Any help appreciated!

Get a new regulator from Giltrap, same price as qualitat. They only sell genuine now as the aftermarket crap lasted 5 mins.
Bout $140 or something maybe 180....I cant really remember.
 Lube your window guides.
The end is nigh, but the end of what is the question?

hmmmm would seem that the motor is actually stuffed, not the regulator.
Just want to at least wind the damn window up so that it is securing the vehicle as it is parked outside on a night!

If you can hear the motor it is the regulator that is gone.

Otherwise it could be the motor or the controller. I have a spare motor you can have cheap.

Don't wind the window up, if you manage to wind it up then can't get it down again you have to break the glass to get the regulator out.

Check the wiring between the door and the body of the car. Pull the cover back and have a look. I had this issue with my old VR6 and it was just a broken wire.

If the motor clicks its usualy the regulator cable is all munched up in the pulley wheel, but yes as Golfboy said the wiring between pillar/door does happen often too but window will be completely dead.

Had same fault on mine, window just clicked when door was shut, when I opened the door, then the window worked. I found the earth wire in the door wiring had half broken, causing the fault, soldered wire back together and all good, easy cheap fix if yours is the same.

If the windows up and you cant get it down you just have to cut the cables on the reg and then you can push the glass down and undo the clamps. I have managed to undo the clamps with the window up too but you need "spaz" hands to get in there  :P
