Golf R not pleasing the locals
« on: May 20, 2010, 09:07:32 PM »
I hear that th Golf R is proving not to be the car everyone though around town.
A number of people complaining that the ride is rubbish and even with dcc its not a nice drive, preferring the older mk5's.

We just bought a Gti Mk6, and time to start work modding it.
Seems a pretty nice ride and nice with the vienna leather kit and heated seats.

Black of course.

No DCC, happy with the factory setting, and did run a demo one with dcc for a while.
factory is all good, and we can always change the set up to suit.
18's going on , new map, and milltek.

Against the Ed30 Mk5, obviously not as quick but after the map there will not be a lot between them.
Smaller turbo spools quicker on the MK6 so thats nicer for normal round towny stuff, but less 'kick'

despite what people say , i think the MK6 is a big step up from the Gti Mk5.
New dsg software is good. Chassis nicely balanced, though the factory michelin 17 inch tyres are s**te. No traction to be fair, thus going to 18's with top end tyres.
launch control just lights them up something crazy and gets no grip at all.
Stereo needs an upgrade even though we got the 510 touch screen. Thats easy fixed.
Vienna leather is a no brainer, so much nicer and you get heated seats as well.

Need to do more mileage in it and give it a good thrash but i think with new software in it and on decent rubber it will be a very nice drive.

Well done.

Beautiful interiors in them, great build quality, styling is a bit understated.

What have you go planed for it?

I gained new found respect for the MK6 GTI at Meremere Drag Strip, perfect launch and gear change every run and the times it was getting for what the guy claimed to be a stock car were phenomenal, I was really impressed with the systems in them.

Personally I would get sick of the Golf R in about two minutes with its AWD, DSG, and driver assistance cutting in to save/enhance me.. Makes for a hell of a fast car though, a mini GTR as such in the way it is as fast as some cars with far greater raw talent.

Personally I would take the Sirocco R with a conventional Manual over the Golf R simply because its FWD and is said to be a lot more fun… but then id stop at the pub get half pissed and put a deposit on a New Megane RS250 Cup  ;)

Ha ha, i feel ya. (so to speak)
I think we are going to make a special edition dealer car, but make a 270 bhp gti , which to be fair will eat the R , just not off the line of course.
Exhaust, Milltek of course, Forge bits, maybe intercooler but im not sure yet,Forge DV, Custom map it, and the new sound system , amp and speakers is a must.
Factory is actually rather dissapointing having had other audis lately.
Even the VRS system kicks its butt.

Need to do some more miles in it to get more of a feel, but it feels small , light and nimble on the road, more so than the Ed30, as cool as they are!

I actually would be keen on modding up a Golf R and sirocco R , nice and safe 300+ bhp , and that in the sirocco would be wicked i reckon.

Thing is, as expensive as the Golf R is, by the time you option a GTI with leather and a few other niceties and add some go fast bits you have a car costing near the same as the R anyway  ???

Personally I would rather a no frill’s special edition biased on the manual GTI with cloth with a few go fast bits, remap, milltek and a Eibach Spring kit would make for a proper driver’s car and should still be priced competitively against the no options R.

Could offer the package to people with the Leather and DSG cars as an upgrade and hope they dont do the math.

DDC?

i'm guessing dynamic dampers perhaps? only to end up in a few years as dreadful design cockup when it fails.

Nice one  :D

It shouldn’t fail in a few years, the technology is hardly new. The system is expected to last as long as a conventional set up and when it does come time for a replacement your average Joe will opt for a cheap alternative just like people always have with active shock replacements.

It is a brilliant system and really works in the real world, I had it on my AH SRI-Turbo going back a few years ago and it was brilliant. It can’t compensate for proper suspension design and good damping though  ;)

DDC has been around for a while. Uses magnetic fluid which varies the damping, the old shape dsg TT 3.2 was one of the first vag cars to have it I think.
