So over the last few weeks, my flatmate has been looking for a Mk IV GTi. He's coming up to Auckland this weekend, and is going to look at this one: http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auction_detail.asp?id=32742618&key=237619
It's at Autowerks (245 Gt South Road).

I was wondering if there was anyone here who knew about them who would be willing to spare an hour to go and check it out with him? It'd be hugely appreciated.

If so, please PM me, and I'll hook up phone numbers, etc.

Thanks.

hello all

this is my first post, and im the flatmate si is talking about.

am searching for a mk4 golf gti, and am wondering what i need to look out for...will be in auckland tomorrow and id love to drive back to wellington in one...i have around 17k max to spend.

thoughts?  anyone know of any cars??

cheers

hitmanGTI

there are a few around all imports obviously..

Um 17 should see you right..

put it this way i payed 20000 for my car that only had 47thousand Ks

so anything more than that and you should be able to screw the dealer down..

rhysparry

thanks hitman

i hear i should be avoiding imports from singapore?  anything else i need to listen for when i go for a drive?

any other advice - im new to this!

cheers

timmay

Not an expert myself either sorry!

But somethings i've read about include the turbo not spooling up correctly/smoothly or you loose boost after you change gears. Listen out for anything strange too I guess.

Looks pretty good! $18K is not bad either. Its got the subtle lil bodykit parts too which makes it stand out a bit. Go for a drive!!!

Screwed up turbos you should be able to pick up straight away..
Screwed up Diverter valves most people dont notice but make the car jerky and sound stupid..

hitmanGTI

listen for the diverter valve when driving.. shut your windows and have no music.. accelerate and once boost comes on drop the throttle off completly if the car jerks alot and the Blow off valve (diverter valve) makes a "Ch ch ch ch" she is screwed.. easy to replace but nonetheless screwed...

Do you lose much perforamce if your diverter value is shot?

Um i dont think so but it can be bad for the car.. basically its impossible to drive the car slowly and comfortably.. as you know its to take the presure build up of the turbo and being a diverter valve it helps reduce lag.. but if you hammer hard and shift hard no speed is lost.. it can just cause unsettling weight shifting ( ie bad in corners making throttle off oversteer more likly to occour etc etc..

so naturally to avoid the horrible jerking (i thought it was just cos the car was underpowerd) i would drive a bit faster and shift fast.. inturn the turbo never really had the chance to have the damaging presure build up take place..

Is your one buggered nik? it worth getting a new one Forge or someother similar replacement..

do replace it.. youll know it was buggered if it makes the car much nicer and smoother to drive
