Ok, im weighing up a new euro wagon (to a budget) looking at a 1996 A6 wagon with 198k on the clock or a later model (1998-1999) VW Passat with around 120ks on the clock.  Any opinions either way? not too bothered about performance (but it is nice to have a bit of grunt) looking for practicality, reliability and something that is not going to cost me a fortune in repairs etc.  any  advice appreciated.

Cheers

slowmo

between the two, probably better value with a v6 4m passat or even a w8 passat?  ;D

Depends on the engine type, size and overall condition.

the lower Km car could be knackered while the higher Km car could have been looked after well, driven on long trips and generally better maintained.

Big 4.2V8 vs 1.8 N/A  - the V8 is likely to last onger as there's less load on it.

Diesel - will go forever if well looked after.

Personally I'd be looking at both very carefully.

They'll both cost a fortune.....

Lower km's will usually pay off if both cars are similar. When you get into the 200+ km's zone things like power steering pumps, dodgy heaters and other one offs can play up.
Both will be expensive for parts but you knew that already, all cars can "cost a fortune", not all give a rewarding drive though.
I think the Passat will have a better safety rating and they are nice to drive, although I've never driven an A6...

I would go for the Passat with the low kms, in fact after the problems I have had with the gearbox in my S3 at 150,000kms next time around i would buy a euro at around 100,000kms at the most as it seems like allsorts of problems come up in the 150-200k region - suspension bushes, clutch, electrics etc.

How about going to the new shape Passat?
