I ended up passing on the Lupo, it was a 2005 model at Turners North Shore.
At the end of the day I could have owned it for $7,600 plus Fees, plus Reg.

The thing was it didnt have any service history and at 102,000kms I would have to do the cambelt, rollers and tensioners which was $573 RRP from VW NZ (parts only).
The car has also had a crash in the front, which looked like it was a light one but a poor repair. And the rear bumper was cracked . . . All from a car I was told was a grade 4.

This is what my brothers thoughts were to get it to a condition Id be happy with:

1x inner arch for driver side
2x covers for from tow hook
Repair front bumper ? lugs are broken off there lower grille should be attached
Repair front right guard ? above front right wheel it is not a straight line ? its bent, cut etc ? you have to be on your knees to see this.
Straighten front right inner guard to line up to slam panel ? this should also fix bonnet / guard gap (bonnet touches guard on left side when closed, big gap on right side)
Repair crack in rear bumper
Repaint:
Both mirrors
Rear bumper
Front bumper
Front right guard
Rear spoiler

Plus Id want to get rid of the crappy aftermarket double din radio and have to repair two holes in the dash.

Here are pics of the car:

Those spoilers all do that, even when you repaint the spoiler the bubbling will just come back again.
Looks pretty tidy and a great deal for the money.
All those repairs needed to make it mint are very very easy.

For that sort of money yes I think you are being too fussy  ;)
That car would be 10K all up, everything sorted but then I'd do it all myself anyway to get it right.

Nik mate, honestly I facepalmed when I read this  :( Not trying to be harsh but I can't believe you would turn down a Lupo GTI for $7600 with a couple of minor issues. Even if the car just started and ran ok that's a bargain price and I thought the stated aim was to own it for a short while, have some fun and flick it on. Surely you wouldn't get a better candidate for that of activity?

In fact I'd argue you'd have way more fun in that car than a mint, low kms vehicle - and that's because you'll have the devil may care attitude. Which is exactly how Lupo GTI's should be driven - balls to the wall with a maniacal grin on your face the whole time.

At the end of the day your call and you had your reasons but I think you walked away from a pearler of an opportunity!

Remember it didnt have any service history which is a biggie for me.
It was $7,600 plus $395 for plates and Reg, another $400 for success fees which equals $8,400, plus the cambelt parts which takes it to $9,000, and the labour to have it fitted so that takes it up to $9,300. Then there is the paint and panel which would be at least $1,000. So Im then up to $10,300 for a serviced car in a condition Id be happy with. I may as well have purchased the red Lupo GTI that was for sale for an asking price of $10,990 done 10,000kms less.
Yes I would have loved the Lupo but for a second car that Id only be owning for 6 months I wouldnt be prepared to lose money on it. I might think about importing my own one through some of Dads contacts, one with a service history.

I think Nick will find a mint one soon. Everyone has made valid points. Bottom line is that it's buyers market at the moment and more will show up. I want a red one to go day about with my black one  >:D
