I took both a Golf R and Scirocco R for a test drive today. Coming from an RS4, it was always going to be a hard sell but I had to start somewhere…

The thing I really wanted to find out was whether the DSG could really substitute for a manual gearbox. In my mind, at least for the ones fitted to these cars, the answer was no. I found that the change was still too slow. But what I did find, unexpectedly, is that these cars were fun to drive even letting them change gear themselves. The blip on the downshift and the muted “explosion” on the upshift were smile inducing. The engine sound was also a pleasure. I found manual shifting confusing, as this appeared to be something you did in addition to, as opposed to instead of, the transmission changing automatically. I didn’t bother in the end but would experiment with it further given more time. I did find the downshift paddle quite close to the indicator stalk so managed to flash the hi-beams at least one innocent motorist!

In Drive mode, the cars moved into high gears very quickly. At 60km/h, the Golf shifted to 5th, the Scirocco to 6th. Changing the transmission into Sport mode both saw them use 3rd gear at 60km/h, which seemed too low (I’d have the RS4 in 4th for the same speed).

My last experience with a turbo was a WRX STi Ver. 8. The VW turbo is a lot smoother and while it did not have the raw kick of a WRX, it certainly made up ground well when called upon, although after an initial delay. Having said that, with some more time in the car (the salesperson did suggest having the car for a day to really get used to it), a quick downshift would probably remedy that.

Both cars were nice places to sit, at least in the front (I didn’t bother experiencing either car from the rear seat, I don’t plan on ever sitting there). Both cars had cloth instead of leather, which was no bad thing either.

The interiors in both were great, nicely laid out dash with plenty of colour from the dials and screen. Plenty of gadgets and entertainment features to make the time stuck in traffic more bearable. These are features that the VW’s had over the RS4, which is almost sparse by comparison (and yes, I could throw some money at addressing this but the fact that these were default options in the VW that fit in with the overall design and layout were a plus in my mind).

I enjoyed the Golf more than Scirocco.

Now armed with some idea of what to expect from the DSG, I wanted to try a S5. But my wife decided she didn’t like those so never got that far…

Maybe I’m just a dinosaur and get amused easily but thought I’d share my experience. In the end, I didn’t buy either but the Golf R is something I would definitely consider with some more time behind the wheel.

Regarding the Apr tune.  Can understand where you are coming from.

As for the SatNav, I was indicating factory vw SatNav, aerial adaptor should be the same.
The GPS aerial comes with the SatNav radio.

The DSG does take a little getting used to. They are of course designed to shift up to the most fuel efficient gear which is why they get thru them pretty quick in D mode.
Once you get used to the shift paterns you will be a load more confident on the manual changes , ie where and when.
Sport mode in town is a waste of time and it will always hold at least one gear lower than you need.
You can of course change the software in them to change shift patterns etc to custom them more to your driving style.

I find it interesting you comment on the changes being too slow, because if you mean between the gears then there is no way you can change quicker in a manual especially under load given you are not off the throttle at all.

I guess they are just a massive change from the RS4, and i have had an RS4 also. All i can say is that they are brilliant in their own right when you get used to them.

Thanks for that feedback and your comments, all very interesting, relevant and useful. No doubt a bit more time behind the wheel will help me to make up mind.

I also need to stop reading all the media reviews and articles about the R! Sometimes I can analyse my way out of a good thing.

After having a Golf R for a day to get used to the car and the transmission, I'm impressed. The transmission gives me the best of both worlds, its pace is easily accessible, has a nice interior and is very functional. It isn't as imposing as the RS4 nor has its pedigree and levels of performance but having been there and done that, time for something new that suits other changes occurring in my life.

Will let you know if a deal is struck...

For a few dollars more, you could stick with Audi ........... have you driven the RS3?

Just about worth the extra money for the sound of that motor alone ......

To me, the one thing missing from the R, is the sound. The V6 may be heavier/slower/thirstier, but it sounds so much better.

I heard the RS3 motor (in a TT-RS) at the Tauranga Audi/VW dealer a month or so ago. It really does sound very nice. Now, if they put that motor in the Golf R ...........

There is a fair bit you can do to make the R sound nicer BUT it's still never going to have the howl of the v6 not the unmistakeable burble of the 5 pot.
Will the ever use it in the golf? Well who knows? the USA market has the 2.5 Rabbit? Anything is possible

I have had a MkIV V6 4Motion Golf, a MkIV R32 and now a Bora V6 4Motion. There is nothing quite like the sound of a V6 being wound out.

I have also had a couple of MkIV V5 Golfs. I really liked the sound they made, but the V5 Golf never handled particularly well. They have an almost rough sound (like the new RS3) which is quite intoxicating.

Yep had no idea about the TTRS until I heard one from a Youtube video, gave me chills. About the only thing I prefer over Volkswagens V6 in terms of sound, if I had the money even though I'm a VW nut I'd buy the Audi RS3 no problem. Are they even coming to NZ? Loved the article in the Top Gear mag about it, looks great.

Oh ok, doubt there would be many sales in NZ? But then I have seen a few Golf R's around so there is somewhat a market for performance hatches. Just a shame that near none of the owners of any RS3 in NZ wouldn't want to take it around a track, I'd love to hear it.

The noise of the 5-cyl is addictive.  I dream about it...
