Apart from looking cheap, nasty and being unsafe, undersized tyres may be illegal shortly - better check first.

195mm is 7.6" so not much difference there, its not unsafe and its not like im trying to run a 155

Which means sod all!  ::)
What is the approved rim widths according to the tyre manufactuer - if they approve an 8" rim, sweet, if they don't then they regard it as being unsafe and so should you!?
Heck, it's your choice but don't complain when you get rejected and have to buy new ones that are approved...
[edit]
Can't find anything under a 215 that approves an 8" rim but several which approve a 7.5" rim - you 'might' get by but, IMO, it may be a problem later, depending on the tolerance the proposed reg's allow.

Sorry about coming on a bit strong, but I really don't care for trends that not only have no redeeming values, but are a potential danger.

There is no way a 215 is going to fit, 195 is the widest i can go and its hardly what I call stretching

 8) 8) 8) 8) ;D ;D ;D

Seriously, though, the OP may have to reconsider the wheel size - maybe a bit more inset if determined to run 8" rims and/or roll the arches.

An 8 inch rim on a Mk1 or a Mk2 is going to tramline like crazy. It depends if you're into driving, or the "look" or "scene" of the car . . .
