Cheers.  When I was young I really couldn't stand buying a slow old VW.  Then I got here and maybe it was age but really appreciated their style.  Now I'm giving it the heart of pumping adrenaline it deserves - ha ha.  If I was to move back to NZ I'd take this with me - that's how much I dig it's style.

You should have a Melbourne vask meet and take some photos.
Is it cool fun there?

Project wasserboxer is dead. Have decided to stick with aircooled power.  When I get some $ together I will be building a 1916 with CB performance fuel injection kit running 48IDAs.  I just really love the aircooled thump and don't want to cut too much of this car up as she is solid and rust free.

Only mod done lately is a very low tech aircon install and flat 4 GT steering wheel.
I'm getting the front seats restored at the mo to original condition with a red houndstooth fabric insert.  Also getting a new carpet kit built.

Salty, think about this 90.5 x 78 makes a nice torqey 2L
Thats the combo I have for my T34 Ghia, going to run injection on it from a 2.0L MK4 Golf.......why you ask?
Most parts are able to be obtained virtualy free, factory sorted ECU and driveability that aftermarket can't match.
Sure there will be stuff to sort out but I'm going to give it a go, injection on the cheap.

That is something I hadn't thought about.. interesting.  A lot of guys here build them from Holden injection setups.  If you have any pics when you build I'd be very keen for a gander.  How much bhp will your 2.0 rate at?  I'm looking at 105ish with a Rod Penrose block.

Already have all the components for a brand new longblock, just have to assemble it.
Would be dissapointed of it didn't make 120-130hp, I like the idea of a VW injection as the bits are easy to get and know what I'm doing.
Will also have full vag-com ability to take logs, fault codes etc.
Look at it this way a 2.0 Golf conservatively makes 115hp so that works within what I'm thinking and using the VW ECU the map can be tweaked to suit the engine  ;D

Wow.  That's a cool sounding setup.  Would you consider the 2.0 to be a bit of a stroker.. less on revs more torque?  Maybe you should build 2 injection systems  ;)

Also - the 1916 can be built easily for 130bhp for similar $ - but would be a bit lumpy for town driving

Yes thats what it is, stock stroke is 69mm so the 2.0 (2007cc) is a 78mm stroker with the nice thick walled 90.5 cylinders.
I also have big valved D port Scat heads which should flow nicely, I'm not a fan of revs with an aircooled motor so torque is more important to me.

My thought was that if we built identical engines we could share the cost of a custom map, I'd get Rich at Viper to change ign advance curves etc. (which would be completely different for an aircooled motor anyway)
The injection I'm going to use would be from a DBW Golf (2001 onwards) as these have the much more tuneable ME7 ECU.
No distributor needed as its all crank trigger on the MK4's, will be plenty of shagging around but nice modern injection.

So glad your doing it this way Salty.
Turbo motors are a big pain in the bum. 130hp and loads of torque and nice throttle response will see you very happy and it won't be a gas guzzling over complicated nightmare.
