I know that some of this has been covered in other posts, but none of it is really specific.
Has anyone heard of APR (www.goapr.com.au) I was looking at getting one of their chips but am unsure about quality etc. Has anyone here got their modified ECUs or had any dealings with them?
Carbonio (www.carbonio.net) has some new cold air intakes out. Will these work because the air will be heated up as it goes through the turbo negating any benefit from sucking in colder air.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

APR are good. Not great, but good. Just make sure their chips suites your ECU# AND the petrol in your area. Some Euro chips are 98 RON only.

Cold air intakes are a waste of time on the 1.8TQ, the std airbox is as good as it gets.

I'm the chap who started the Audi-go faster thread. From what I have learnt to date there are 4 good options:

1) Spend 3-4K on a chip with Conti's or Giltraps. Your car is off the road for 2 weeks as they send the chip to Europe.

2) A Revo chip can be done by a crowd down in Mt Maunganui. But car needs to be post 1998 (sadly mines a 96). GTI-Man can give you their details. Cost is circa $1700.

3) The option I'm going with is to do a chip through Road Race and Rally (talk to Ron) they do all the racing Evo's and the Turners Car Auctions RS4 targa car. Their getting a chip through an Aussie Audi specialist and a diverter valve. Total cost is approx $2300 including a tune. Prior to installing the chip you need to get a Dyno to check the car is all OK and for fuel/air reading . I did this last Saturday through Gary Capper Motorsport in Puke and found out my cars boost was low and I'm missing 20-30 odd hp. So I have booked the car into Giltraps over Xmas to get this sorted. The car must be running well and to standard spec. before you can boost its performance. So In my case the chip and DV will go in early Jan. I will keep you all posted on how it goes. Road Race and Rally also have an exhaust for $2500 and springs for $650 (both just bolt on). I personally don't want these as I like a quiet comfortable car, but these may be of interset to other Audi-dudes out there. They also want me to Dyno the car once chipped to confirm the power increases and that the car is running well etc. I find RR&R very professional and feel this is the safest/best option for me as the last thing I want to do is F**k my car.

4) When getting the car dynoed at Gary Capper Motorsport, they said I should have put in a new engine management system as this would have given bigger gains than a chip as the car is tuned based on NZ fuel. You can get a cheap system for $1,000 or a Motec for about $2,500. This might be a serious option for Benji with the 2.4 A4 to investigate? When I found this out I had already committed to option 3 above, but feel this would give you the biggest hp gains. Gary was telling me about an RS Golf he did with hot cams and new engine mgmt that pumps out 300hp! Does anyone know this car?

I hope this all helps...................................

Cheers
Paul

I would avoid option 4 on a VAG car, unless you want to spend serious money, and allot more than what is quoted there. VAG OEM engine mgmt is allot more advanced than 3rd party computers, and to try and replicate it will cost big $$. OEM computers are steup to avoid accidental or intentional killing of engines, 3rd party computers arn't. You need serious dyno time to setup 3rd party computers properly, and you'll probably find there arnt any defaukt VAG maps to kick start this process.

There is no such thing as a RS Golf.
He might be talking about Simon R32s Mk4 R32 Golf. I think the parts used on this car came from Rex and Ching and were AMD equipment.

From what ive been told. To get an mtm chip would take at least six weeks unless i buy another ECU and send that over. I cant wait that long without a car.

Ill try RR&R and see what they can do.

Note: US cars have US spec ECU's (emission control) which are different to NZ and AU cars which have Eurospec ECU's.

The main problem with using a different ECU for the newer cars is the immobiliser and security system. This is integral with the Motronic and has its own security code.Unless you have the code number and the tuner knows how to recode the security system (most dont),then you wont have a functioning security system any more. You can change the ECUs around though, one for track, one for road.Bit of a pain really.
With the older 1.8t cars this is not so much a problem but you need an ECU with the same type number. There are many different numbered ECUs for the 1.8t,some are compatible, some are not although they look the same.

I have also heard that many of the gauges (dash) will not work without the factory ECU in place. So again, it gets complicated.

Rex, ran into one of your old customers today. A guy who works accross the road from me who drives a blue RS2. I believe you did him an ECU update and a few sundries.

Yes,thats Andre. As Nik says, its his Dads old car.I spoke to Niks Dad about it and he was very dissapointed that the car had been modified.
Im actually doing another RS2 ECU remap for a Kiwi who will be in the UK over Christmas/New Year.He is bringing his ECU with him.

RR&R tell me they have your car off the road for about 3-4 days. The parts take a week from Aussie.
