RS4 B5 MAF and DV replacement
« on: February 15, 2011, 02:18:25 PM »
Hi guys

I've had some issues creeping up on me that I think it's time to get sorted

The problem I see is stuttering (not a smooth acceleration)

Even at 1/3rd throttle I can feel the car accelerate, stutter, then go again.

I know most people point the finger at the MAF and DVs, so I plan to book the car in, let them know the problem and run this idea by them

Anyone know ball park costs for these parts?

I've also noticed an exhaust leak coming out under full \ high revs (can hear it hissing very loudly when it's pumping out the power).  Looking under the car I can see the flex pipe is frayed.

If it is them, is it something that can be replaced?  or is it better off getting an after market Miltek job?

Your help \ advice appreciated

Cheers

John

The full B5 RS4 milltek is quite expensive due to the cost of the cats, though the gains and sound are worth it!

Can do you some forge motorsport diverter valves for a decent price
98 A4 Avant, lowered, 19's (sold)
00 Polo manual (sold)
01 Golf Mk4 wagon, lowered, manual, BBS (sold)
88 Golf Mk2 (ABF and mk3 running gear)...project
87 Polo 86c, slammed (sold)
01 Polo GTI (gone)
01 Audi s3...bit much to list, money pit

how many DV's do these things have?  and is it worth straying from the OEM path?

And when you say quite expensive (full Miltek) how much do you mean?

Thanks

Stock DV's were around $110 each from the dealer last year.
Just ring your dealer.

From what I've read on other Forums most people seem to stick with the std DV's from the TT (part # ending in 710N) and they aren't that expensive (you need 2). You can test them by sucking one end with your finger on the other end and see it it holds a vacumm (sorry can't remember what end).

The MAF is around the $400 mark if I recall. I've heard that to check a MAF you disconect it and go for a drive. If the car goes better the MAFS stuffed (beware no MAF=no ABS).

However neither of these may be your problem.

My car suffers the same issue under light load. Been to Giltraps 3 times to correct it but they can't find anything wrong. Its had new MAF, new DV, new pressure sensor...

I have noticed that the hesitation improves after going for a good thrash. After city driving it seems to make it worse.

hmm, maybe the thrashing makes the ECU learn something new (uses different parameters etc).

I got the 710N at around $80 each and a new MAF from brodie at about $300.

Yeah oem 710N is supposed to be good and no ongoing maintenance is required (I've had them on my A4 and RS4 a couple of years with no issues). Part no. from another forum:
06A 145 710 N ----- 225HP OEM Air Cut Off Valve [DV] - Bosch # 0 280 142 106

Part throttle issues could be O2 sensors too? Also both you guys are running remaps yeah? From personal experience there are not many companies that really know how to map these cars properly. I've just had my RS4 done by Viper Tuning (custom map) and it is so smooth and strong, night and day over what I had before. Also the AFRs are safe under load. I've still got his professional tuning cable here so if you want a great map PM me soon. Rich is a genius in my book. http://audisrs.com/forum58.php, http://vipertuning.com/

I had intermittent flat acceleration when the car had done 60kms. They ended up replacing 3x of the 4 exhaust sensors (ECU had faults logged). That helped, but there was some remaining intermittent flat acceleration. There was no ECU faults logged at this point.
I proactively asked them to replace the MAF and DV's, BINGO, full power!

MAF was ~$450 from memory, and DV's $110 each.
Well worth the money to get my 280KW back.

We were constantly replacing DV's and O2 sensors and replaced the MAF twice, seems all the replacement parts came out of singapore so not sure if that has anything to do with the DV's failing on a regular basis.

All VAG parts go through or come from Singapore. They have a warehouse there for servicing the pacific region. The parts are still the same as what you get from Germany.
