Hey John/all, i have exactly the same issue with the stuttering for the first 5 mins when she starts.  seems to clear after that.  Did replacing the DV's help and the Maf too?  i had the fuel pump replaced not so long ago and Brodie pointed out the DV"s were stuffed.  just need to check its not a fuel supply issue from the new pump.  If it was the DV's what was the cost for install?

Cheers

Replacing DV's is a DIY job (if you can reach them in a RS4?). The should cost you less than $100 each.

Check for vac leaks also, had to fix vac leaks on a B5 RS4 the other week and it fixed up the idle.

I reckon it would only be a 30 min job for a professional. As stated many DIY swap (I haven't). Air recirculation or cutoff valves I think is the name Audi give them. I can recommend Brodie European if you want a professional to do it. If Giltraps quoted 4-6 hours I imagine they were thinking of something else - like EGT sensors.

My prob was a hose leak as well.  it got much worse (well the stuttering didn't, but I could start to hear the noise) and I had the part replaced (intercooler pipe) and all seems better (touch wood!)

If you start getting intermittent types of flat or hesitating power, the exhaust sensors always go and often dont throu codes.
