Fuel consumption/ economy
« on: March 25, 2011, 07:05:07 pm »
Hi all, just interested to see those you who own the latest model Polo and Golf what kind of fuel economy you are getting from your vehicles..

I'm interested because my Polo TSI 77kw is not getting anything close to what's claimed in the brochure, and I know you always take the official figures with a grain (or pinch) of salt as they are tested under "ideal" conditions but mine is no where close to them, so in my mind it's almost a form of false advertising if the real-life performance is no where close to what the manufacturer claims.

Also got interested after reading on the OZ forum for those of you interested, here are the links

http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f112/mk6-fuel-consumption-most-least-per-tank-thread-31823.html
http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f128/kilometres-fuel-consumption-pricing-thread-50350.html

Looks like Golf MK6 with 1.4 TSI 118 Kw is getting at very good economy, a lot claimed low 6L/ 100Km, which is at least close to the official figure of 6.0 combined.

Polo 77 TSI official numbers are 5.3L/ 100Km and 4.4L/ 100Km. I've not seen mine getting close to those numbers, on highway the lowest I've seen is mid-high 5s (not 4.4) and average over the past 4000km is sitting at 7.5L/ 100km. I do mostly city driving on weekdays and motorway 33% of time.

Interested to see what you guys are getting from your golf and polo.

Oh, I get on about 550km to 600km out of a tank of 40-45L, and that's mostly city driving during weekdays and weekend on the motorway.

We have an economy map which will lower consumption by 8-10% and give arouns 10-12% gains.
There are not too many cars that actually get that close to manufacturers specs in nz.

The 'economy' figures are based on a ridiculous European standard which bears no relevance to real life.
The only way to get an indication of what to expect is to look at the figures achieved in road tests which appear to me to be about 25% less than the fantasy figures quoted by the manufacturers

Well, city driving weekdays would be the 'Urban' category on the official VW figures, which is quoted at 6.8 ltr per 100km so at mid to high 5's you're doing well.  Remember though that these things are a guide for comparison between cars at point of purchase  - everyone drives differently and in different conditions. Fuel consumption is also affected by how much weight is in the car (people or general crap!), is the air-con always on, do you check/adjust your tyre pressures at least once a week,  plus some people are heavier on the gas/brake pedals than others....and of course I presume you are using the correct grade of petrol? min 95 RON, ideally 98 RON and definitely NOT the 91 RON stuff (also bear in mind that as VW say, to achieve the max fuel consumption benefits on TSi engines they should be run on ultra low sulphur  petrol - which I don't think is available in NZ?)

Shoulda bought the diesel, my 15000 kms average on 3.0 v6 diesel was 7.2. Could get 5.5 on trips.
Comes down also to power/torque to weight in what you will achieve as well and its incredibly hard to match the quoted figures on the brochures.
Feel sorry for the Nissan navara owners, many averagin 14+ litre per 100 in a 2.5 diesel ute! Nissan says its 'in spec'
