iRacing and Bathurst
« on: May 05, 2011, 07:48:26 AM »
If you want Bathurst included in iRacing (THE most realistic driving/racing simulation available for public use - http://www.iracing.com/ ) go here and sign the petition.
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/bathurstiracing/

iRacing is not as glitzy as GT5 but the driving physics modelling is much more accurate. And unforgiving!
Biggest downside is cost........

These tracks are laser scanned and more accurate than any other simulation. I'd love to see the Nordschleife included but the cost of closing the track to do the laser scanning would be prohibitive I guess - a massive task considering the length of the circuit.
Bathurst would be cool.

Who here races on iRacing?

You have to play iRacing on a PC dont you Greg?

I had a play of Shift 2 over the weekend, it has Bathurst on it, the detail seems to be very good.

Either PC or Windows installed on Boot Camp on a Mac (I do - works fine). It's a web-browser based interface.

I can only get so into vid racing as the depth of view is all wrong and speed perspective. Plus no bum info.
I agree with great care and skill you can build to a very competent level on such sims but I find them a little unforgiving.
thus the gt games are more fun i recon. smash em out the way.

So you prefer the rip-tear-bust genre Jem?

Wow, I'm surprised  ::)

So how do try it without actually spending any money? Or do you have to sign up for the $12/one month plan to achieve that?

Do you think im rough as guts Greg?
 Im not.
I just think with the lack of real perspective you have more "fun" on a game not quite so realistic and unforgiving.
I nearly beat my fav car game V8 supercars, good because it has all types of racing even tho its called v8 supercars. But the last part of the game is the F1 cars and they are just soooo hard to win at it drove me nuts. The computer cars you race against are going full speed like they would as they can "see and feel" properly. Almost impossible to keep up with the perspective you get from the game.
 Drove me nuts it did.
I don't really feel like im driving more than just playing spacies.

You need to sit down with a proper racer not some crappy arcarde game, get a steering wheel, a good suround sound system and give it a good nudge.

Id like to try iRacing but i don't have a decent PC or Wheel that would work. But i have Forza3.

The problem for me is the games that don't 'feel' realistic don't have that long term pick it up and go for a drive appeal, my mates and I oftern just go put down 3-4 laps of the Ring, or go drive Fujimi Kido pass when we are bored..

I went to the extent of paying $300 for a set of turtle beach 7.1 headphones (and dont regret it ) just so i can hear the guy behind me breathing down my neck as i fly into a off camber corner in my 600hp super charged baracuda  8)
I would hate to think how many hundreds of hours i have behind the wheel on Forza   :P

I agree, a good wheel makes all the difference. Its amazing the feedback you can get from just a wheel.

I did have a feedback wheel.
I have played forza (not 3) and Gt3 etc but I liked the V8 super cars the best.
I think the handling was very realistic and the range and amount of tracks huge.
And very very difficult at the top level.
I like the game to be realistic too but in the end the lack of perspective makes it too hard.
I have seen people play iracing I think at the shop and it was very realistic but it sort of looked slow you had to be so careful.
I guess i don't get the time to practice on them enough.

Thats the key there.. it takes a bit of time to get used to it, and remember to drive it like a car not a game. but Sooooooo worth it...

I'll be drinking,......... and driving the ring tonight... might make a tripple Rottor FD for it..  :P

That's the point really. If a driving sim needs loads of practice and can't be simply picked up in an afternoon then it's probably got a lot to offer.

I used to drive online a lot (on a dial-up connection! - it worked "okay") about 10-12 years ago using Grand Prix Legends. That sim was incredibly realistic - even more so than GT5. BUT, it took about 3 months of heavy use to get any good. You could actually get a realistic feel for the cars handling and weighting and unweighting of the front and back of the car. It still drives well today, but graphically it's way dated.

Grand Prix Legends was a failure commercially due to the difficulty of learning to drive, and lack of glitzy eye candy and silly tweaking. But it attracted a dedicated hardcore of online enthusiasts who developed many add-ons - tracks, cars, setups etc. It is still a very active community today.

The guys who developed Grand Prix Legends are behind the development of iRacing - 'nuff said!

Cant remember and don't have it now. It was quite good though, kicked around quite hard.
I conceded that I do like the easier games but its true in the end Im sure Greg on the Iracing is the pinicale of sims racing.
I would like to have the time and cash to get a good wheel and have a go. Sounds fun.
The ring and bathurst would be great to have on it too.
 Bathhurst is a great track.
