Project Car: Mk3 1.8t
« on: June 20, 2011, 09:27:35 AM »
Righto, time to get a thread going for this..

I've had an itch to build something for a while, and after accidentally buying Chris's chipped 1.8t it has set things into motion

The goal: build a show car quality car, which is comfortable to run around in, as well as something that I can take to the track and have a good blast in

The plan:

Exterior will be a dark gun metal grey colour - similar to what's on the Mk5 and 6's but a bit darker I think, I really like the colour on the Mk6 below. Will have the Vento front end, and will be sitting low on my H&R's, with my SSR's (hopefully) rebuilt to be looking and sitting even better. Looking to fit some 312mm Mk4 brakes but I am starting to doubt if the SSR's will clear them (already had to make modifications to fit on the GTI). If 312 wont fit then I guess it will have to be 288mm. Will have another sit of rims and rubber for the track

Power plant is going to be a 1.8t obviously, chipped and has a KO3s. The goal will be to make the engine bay as clean and OEM looking as possible. I'm thinking I will paint the engine bay as well as the intercooler and associated piping black

Interior will be running a full Mk4 loom, as well as dash. Will give it a nice modern look and feel. It will have working Mk4 airbags, as well as working AC and a Mk4 heaterbox. I'm on the hunt for some Mk3 Recaro's which I will retrim in black leather with double grey stitching to match the paint, while they are being retrimmed I will also put in heater elements. Head liner and A B and C pillars will be retrimmed in black like the original GTI, need to decide if I wrap the pillars in fabric or paint them, I think a wrap will give a better finish.

Audio will be transplanted from my GTI, the flush mounted sub box, Infinity Kappa's, imprinted Alpine 9887 etc. The only thing I will be looking to do different is fit the door speakers to the actual door rather than have them attached to the door card. I will try to do this with the speaker brackets out of a Mk4. We will see how that goes..

Looking to buy this for the heated seats - full retrofit kit for Mk4
 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-Bora-Passat-Retrofit-Heated-Seats-Kit-Looms-/370140859960?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item562e1d4e38

At the moment I'm gathering all the parts, looking to start the build in like November and bang the whole thing out in a month or so
I am still need quite a few parts, but many of them are easily sourced. What I really need which hopefully someone on Vask has hiding is a set of Mk3 Recaro's. I'm also looking for a Bora Sports cluster, but I would settle for a regular cluster with FIS/MFA display, you can buy the Sports inlay anyway

Stay tuned  8)

Hey you wouldn't want to sell me the red debadged grill? I wouldn't even need to paint it to put on my car  ;)

Nah the grille is buggered, the whole top slat is broken and wobbles about, I don't even know how it's still in place it's so broken lol. It's only good for the bin. PM user LVDUB though, he has a new debadged Mk3 grille

Forgot to mention it will also be loosing the arch trims, and the door trim will be replaced with the less chunky later spec trim and colour coded. I also have 97 spec colour coded bumpers here for it too. Contemplating changing the fenders too but at the end of the day it's just a slightly different indicator, unless I find some fenders for a steal I don't think I'll bother.

Will run a semi smooth front bumper (number plate recess delete), along with smooth the washer jets and put them in the rain tray, and smooth the rear wiper

Man thought I came accross a sweet score today with a Bora cluster, walked into AA wreckers and the first car I looked at had the sports cluster, but didn't realise the Passat cluster is slightly different shape to the Golf so no joy there.
They had no manual cars in the yard which I was looking for some related parts from, and I was looking for a Mk4 steering wheel but only had one 3 spoke one which was a tad mouldy so passed on that too

Cool project Sam!

That VR6 was my mates down here - always had something playing up with it, and he never had the money to fix it. Glad to see it go to a good home now :)

Sounds like a great project Sam.

Do you have any idea who is going to paint the car for you?

Also, have you thought of maybe going aftermarket Recaros instead of Mk3 GTI?
