Mk5 GTI replacement DSG paddles
« on: August 29, 2011, 08:24:16 PM »
A friend just bought a nice GTI with some sad looking DSG paddles, a lot of the black/grey paint has worn off leaving unseemly amounts of white plastic exposed.

After recovering from the shock of getting VW replacement prices ($331ea. !!!), he'd like to know if they can easily repainted or if there are alternatives.

You can either paint them with a rubber kit easy to get locally.

Otherwise the likes of osir, make an addon in carbon fibre. Brings the paddles inti a much easier to reach place.

Otherwise having to buy replacements from overseas. Or even better still is install a MK6 steering wheel.

It's a 2007, NZ new, ~75,000km, bee sting, no parking beepers.

Where can you get this "rubber kit" ?

Can you paint them while the paddles are still attached to the steering wheel ?

Since found the Osir and Oettinger videos, don't think he's capable of removing the airbag and dis-assembling the DSG paddles.

And doesn't like the Mk6 GTI wheel - too blingy with all that shiny chrome.

You can paint the buttons as they are. Will post the stuff up tomorrow.
Found it in a place in penrose. Either black. It's basically called plastic dipping kit.
Comes in a spray can. But the DIY colour version you have to figure out your own way of getting it on the parts. Will fix all the door grab handles too.

Much easier to remove steering wheel to do so.

Mk6 wheel does not have to stay chrome. Search the look good in gloss black or dark grey instead of the chrome.

Is this the stuff ?

http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Create_Your_Color_Kit

Even found a guy who did his GTI wheels

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WS14Jnyf5Q

The trick will be avoiding covering up the little -/+ markings on the paddles...

Can Plasti-Dip be applied with a small modelling paint brush ?

I believe it can be brushed on, have not tried. Have my whole kit to do all my door handles. Just have not had time to do so.

Not very likely to find it it there. They do sell it. But have not been able to get it from any of them around the North Shore. Went straight to the Supplier and got Trade.

Drove around in a 2011 TDI A3 DSG with Paddles. Now those are some awesome paddles. From face value. they appear to be the same shape.
But would not bother getting them locally. You should be able to get from the UK for fairly cheaply.

I was extremely impressed. In a straight line not as fast as my GTI. Overall, I would pick one of those anyday of the week.
