I had our '84 quattro bought over on a towtruck from the Shore to Forza Works here in the city last week. It's running, albeit roughly.

Unfortunately I don't have the capital sitting around to get it back into prefect, targa-ready condition; I hope to get it running well enough such that I'll be able to drive it down to Blenheim, where it will be stored until my paychecks become substantial enough.

The digital dash has unfortunately had to be replaced as the unit is fried. I am looking at the economic feasibility of refurbishing or replacing, people on the S2 forum have given me some contacts. Any suggestions for NZ contacts would be appreciated too.

I'll keep this thread updated as the mechanical works progress.

Here's one digital dash link if you haven't come across it already:

Cheers, I've had a look at that link. Dash is not a huge priority, as there are VDO instruments mounted on a carbon fibre panel there for now. I want to get the digital dash back there though.

I'm going to get rid of most of the stickers I think. I'll keep the Castrol and Recaro ones (even though there aren't Recaros in there, yet ::)), maybe one for Forza Works. I'd like to put a couple of Vask stickers on there too - where can I buy some from??

Engine is running well, but only when below 4000 rpm. Above that it starts to splutter.

Drove it to Fraser Cars in Birkenhead today to have it inspected for LVV certification. A few minor things to do and it's good to go

Probably the air temperature sensor on the alloy inlet body - has a thickish black wire that bends sharply onto the sensor, 4000rpm is the point it starts cutting out, common failure on the WR.  Peel back the rubber boot at the junction and have a close look at the connection - can be fixed pretty easily.

No, it was at Fraser Cars in Birkenhead for 5 years or so. Is there another quattro there in Audi sport livery?

@John - Thanks for the advice. Is this the sensor you mean?

The connection looks ok & the sensor itself has been cleaned, still no improvement though. I can get a replacement for $240+GST ex Germany. Any suggestions?

There is an interesting urQ in Tauranga. Can't remember the details now, but the owner came up to me at the last Concours and told me about it. I think it may have rally livery. I believe he imported it and was getting various specialists to fix it up for him. The above question jogged my memory! Anyone else know more about it?

yeah it was from the uk only just got off the boat at the end of last year.it was using a WR as a base, done all up like a late A1 and running a bit rough when i saw it.the shop was pretty hush hush about who owned it even when i showed them my UR,i didnt  find out who owned it.

Hold off on getting a replacement at the moment will do some research into what else could give that symptom. What is interesting about the picture is the cable looks quite different to the one on my car, can you follow it to the loom?

Could be over boosting, mates had a torn waste gate diaphragm. Also check all intake connections and replace all the vacuum hose

Before going into a wholesale replacement of all hoses I would do the stumble test. It's about the only thing that doesn't cost money on an Audi ::)
Have the engine running at idle and remove the oil filler cap. If the idle speed drops to a stalling point, or in fact stalls, then the hoses/vacuum is as it should be.
Over boosting is a possibility, assuming there are no vacuum leaks. Plenty of options....
This is essential reading George, this guy has plenty of knowledge -  http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/

Vacuum hose is cheap, 99% of the time its brittle and crumbles away when you take it off,

Also check the condition of the rotor ,cap, leads and plugs and make sure it has the right rotor

Thanks John & 00basil00, your advice is much appreciated.

I should mention that the loom in this car has been pretty well hacked up when the car was converted for Targa use, to be honest I'd be pleasantly surprised if the problem wasn't caused by an electrical issue. I suspect that it is however.

I checked the resistance on the sensor this afternoon as per this page: http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/wiring/Typ85/mac01pin.html#28-25

It sat at about 23ohms, so this would suggest that the sensor is ok. I didn't have time to continue to checking resistance at the ECU end. Hopefully I'll have some time later in the week. I'll have another look at the cap, leads etc then too. The engine was rebuilt a couple of years ago, so mechanically it should be sound. Electrically, well....

Another question - what engine temp does your ur usually run at John?

George
