2006 Mk5 2.0 TDi - DSG issue?
« on: December 02, 2011, 01:13:05 AM »
Hi ,

First post here and I have no doubt someone will have the answer I'm looking for.

I've just bought a 2006 Mk5 2.0 TDi with a DSG box, car has done just over 40,000km and was silky smooth when I test drove it on the day I bought it (six days ago). After driving the car back up to Auckland I noticed that gear changes between 1,2,3 and 4 have become somewhat slow and jerky each day I drive it, mainly when using a light throttle. gears 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 is still smooth and fast. I have also noticed that 4th gear is particularly noisy when the engine is at about 1500rpm. The sound appears to be more from the gearbox side of the car and is hard to describe, a bit like a light rattle.

I've been reading all over the internet about faulty DSG mecatronics or even worm dual mass flywheels. I'm planning on contacting the dealer I bought it from to see what they suggest, however what do you suggest the problem may be and what I should do now that I'm 1200km from where I bought it?

Thanks heaps!

I've driven my 2007 Mk5 a bit more today and haven't noticed anything unusual coming from the gearbox. However, I have definitely heard about such problem before, your description precisely matches what I've heard. It looks like this problem indeed exists on some models, it's kind of scary to think about it  :-\.

I had similar issue's with a MK5 TDI DSG I owned, at 40000km's it will should require gearbox fluid change, If this has not yet been done.
Get it done and at the same time get a Mechatronic's unit reset. It's not all that hard if you have VCDS (aka Vag-com).

This should fix your issue's. If not there is a mall possibility the gear selector on top of the box has broken. Which can be a cheap and easy fix.

If both above methods failed. I'm afraid to give you bad news. It will be a new Mechatronics unit. They only cost $10000 for replacement, labour and fluid.

This price was only February 2011. VW's pricing has come down big time on many components. With a little bit of luck the mechatronics unit happend to be one of them, meaning lower repair/replacement cost.

Vw/Audi have a grace period of up to 5 years on warranty, and you would have a good case against premature failure if it is indeed in need of a mechatronic unit
Audi RS4 450 BHP, Milltek, intake, remapped (sold)
VW Edition 30, 307 BHP remap. Manual. (sold)
Audi S6 V10, Milltek , Audi A4 B8 (sold)
VW Golf MK6 Gti, Black
Skoda Octavia vRS TDi, Blue, Coilovers, Mapped, 19's SOLD
Audi B7 A4 3.0 TDi , Mapped, more to follow

That is indeed comforting to know! The car is a 2006 model but looking at the service history it was first bought NZ new in march 2007 or so, so I wonder when that grace period starts from, hopefully the day it was bought by the first owner.

I called the VW dealer which I bought it from, they offered to get it checked out at one of their sister dealers up in Auckland (Giltrap) where it was originally bought from and has been serviced at so really glad they have been so helpful thus far! Almost bought one from a random dealer but glad i didn't now seeing as how costly fixes could be.

After driving it a bit more after work today the gear changes were feeling a bit quicker and a lot smoother, I guess the engine was warmer than my morning 10 minute commute to work, however there is still the concerning rattle in 4th when going up hill with a light throttle, less so when on the flat. I'm really hoping that if there is a problem it's with the DMF and not the DSG box.... not that I'm hoping for problems :)

Thanks for the responses so far, awesome stuff!

The dsg does not have a dmf as such.
But does have the clutch packs. So by doing a reset it should with a little bit of luck fix the problem.

Don't be silly, I know 95 or 98 is better  ;D .

In all seriousness I've only filled it twice so far, once with Caltex diesel and once with BP diesel two nights ago, it might be just my imagination but the car seems to be running smoother on the BP, could just be me getting used to driving a diesel.

Right doh, watched enough youtube videos about how it has internal clutches to should have known that. I might try get them to try that reset/re-sync thingy, hopefully will get those first few gears changing faster.

Doh TDi :o
Good luck hope it works out.
They are still clutches after all and they do wear out.
Apparently they have to send the whole transmission to Germany to get the clutch redone if the 1st gear plate wears out.
Modern cars, they are so efficient aren't they

Well you will be right in thinking/feeling the BP diesel seems smoother.
However to date caltex diesel has seen the most for performance and mileage compared to all other diesels.

I do know that BP have created a new diesel formula approx 4 months ago.
So perhaps they can be on top now?

I've been running a bit of bio (B10) in mine and it's quite nice.  Seems a little quieter on idle and fuel economy is unchanged.  Helps my conscience... slightly :P
