Yes there's 150hp and 180hp 1.8T's, the latter being near impossible to get here so just go with an AGU 150hp and go from there.

I have one of them  ;D

Personally I think the DBW cars drive so much better than AGU cable ones. But yes go 1.8t.
Too much power is almost enough.

The swap I'm looking at would cost at least 1/4 of that price... right?

Vert, I think I now see. 1.8t would be the way to go. Would love to get the some modern luxuries tho, mk5/6 auto leather seats, Autolights, wipers, wheel controls and full screen clocks.

But yep, one thing at a time I guess...

So with the 1.8t, there are 2 different ones from the golf right? 150hp, 180hp.  Other then power is one better then the other?

If doing a 2.0TFSI swap then 5K won't go very far at all so best to forget it if thats the budget.
Also forget the seats as the mounting is completely different to a MK5.

5G's isn't much to work with if you're considering buying the engine, having it installed, getting it running and modifying it...............don't mean to rain on your parade but those are the facts.

Ahh figured   :-[ , but thanks for being up front Vert :).
Guess Ill need to come up with some different options for the time being..
Maybe build off what I've got like the phantom suggested.  16 or 20v head swap? Would that help with economy and give me a few more horses?

* Head Swap  <--- No idea on the price of doing this, wonder what the gains are like also..
* Cam and springs
* Adjustable cam gear
* Underdrive pully

Please add the list if you can think of anything that is within a feasible price.
2000 Mk4 2.Slow Golf  <---- I like it

Yours is a 2.0 right?
if so forget the head swap, I know you wont want to hear it but sell it and buy a GTI..........
All of your list is a waste unless combined with a ported big valve head and by the time thats said and done you may as well buy a 1.8T
The other thing you could look at is a turbo kit, maybe doable for 5K............just maybe.
