Mk2 GTi I've been offered
« on: January 09, 2012, 09:38:13 PM »
Hey guys,

I've been given a guys details and told to make an offer on his Mk2 GTi.
I've been looking for one for a while but hardly any come on trademe so I'm finally keen to bite the bullet and buy one!

Now, this is where you guys come in. I haven't been given an indication of price so was wondering if you guys could shed a little light on what you think it might be worth - I know thats difficult just from pics alone but any help is appreciated.

Lastly, anything I should look out for?

Details:
UK import done 180,000 miles.
Not too sure on service history as yet.

Thanks in advance,

Auckland based? A few members here are mk2 gurus. I asked platinum VW (ask for allan) and Brendon (GTI's) to have a look at mine before I bought it. Its hard to judge in pics, and i wouldn't make an offer till I saw it.

If you are city based i can have a look for you, i know what to look for on the body...

Hey mate, yeap Auckland based. I know Allan and the guys at Platinum as they serviced my Mk4 for ages (good dudes) so I'll get in touch with them.
I'd really appreciate it if you'd have a look at it (hopefully will view within a couple of weeks) so will keep you posted.

Cool, I have time off during the day most of the week. Alan would be great to have a good mechanical look as they might be kind enough to put it up on a hoist for you to have a peek.

I know, she looks real tidy in the pics.
Leigh is the guy I got the guys details off as I was initially looking at buying his 5 door red GTi. Not too sure if it's his brothers car but sounds too much of a coincidence if it isn't!

You know anything about the car?

Cheers

If its a UK import watch out for oxidization and corrosion in the under carriage from the salt they use on the roads over there. I have seen it on a few other wise tidy cars.

Cheers for the heads up mate.

Nigel from Platinum kindly offered to have a look at it so will get her up on a hoist to have a good inspection.

Just found out the paint is new, that might explain why it looks so tidy on the outside.

Its gotta be worth $4500 or even a bit more if it really has got loads of current receipts?
It looks very tidy. And handy with that hardon tow bar.

I don't think the owner, Gerald, who I have spoken to about the car, will let it go for $4500. Absolutely  No way.

The Riddler

I'm currently bogged down with work and uni so haven't been able to give him a ring as yet.

I think if I had to spend more than $4500 for it then I might wait a while and find one that I'm completely 100% happy with (lower km's, big bumpers etc).

I think he's going to list it on TM in March so if I still haven't found one by then I might consider it.

Will let Gerald know though...

What colour was it? Gun metal Grey? Slim chance I know, but it looks like one I brought back from UK many moons ago.

ther arnt that many gti's about, but if they have spent the money to get a good spray job on it then the rest may well be well looked after too, rust is the biggest enemy on uk inports but it may well be an old import, go with your gut! (and maybe get it checked out too)
