Mechanical Warranty
« on: January 13, 2012, 04:31:14 PM »
My brother has just bought a 2002 Passat V5 (NZ new) that has 145k on the clock, had water pump and cam belt replaced at 90k. Been maintained by CCS since new. Lovely tidy condition but he wants to know if it's worth spending another $1100 on a mechanical warranty. Is there anything likely / known about these cars that would make the warranty a good buy. What's the transmission (auto) like on these?

Well, used car salesman said cam belt / water pump replaced. Looks like the VR5 engine uses cam chain. Is this correct? Thnx (I am said brother, thought I should register!)

I would.
Since I have had my W8, the warranty has covered replacing the cam variator (not a concern for you, but around 8K), the powersteering lines at $1300, a window actuator at $500ish, gearbox output seal and output shaft at almost $1000.
Call it a wise investment in insurance.

V5 is a cam chain.   Looks like the salesman didn't know his product!

Good cars though, I have a 2001 manual estate I brought with me from the UK, love it to bits

Do it, thats a lot of peace of mind in the long run. Do your research on the companies first though. Btw the VW auto gearboxes are notorious, and when they go they get expensive, around the 3k mark to fix, which in itself makes the warranty worthwhile.

Look carefully at small print, like maximum claim value of 4k or excess of 1k.

They are cam chain so the dealer was a lieing piece of dirt.

Gee $1100 for a warrantee now! They must be getting wise to how bad these modern VWs are.
My mk5 customer had a warantee but she got a letter saying the company had gone broke.
All those W8s they have to keep fixing then writing off cause they drop the collets into the engine ::) ::)

Thanks for replies. Cost is about $1200 for warranty, and each "incident" has $500 excess, and for next 6 months (until 150K Km) max $4K payout, then drops to max $2.5K.  So, would need to have 1 problem greater than $1700, 2 more than $2,200, 3 at $2700, etc. So, still debating usefullness / cost effectiveness. :-\. Comments appreciated.

Not worth it if max pay out is 4k.
But then you have to work out there side of it, clearly they think they wouldn't have a hope of making money of you if they made the deal any easier.
Fact is I don't see how they make any money anyway.........Oh yea I do its cause people who own Jap cars also sometimes buy these warrantee's when they don't need to.
The jap owners pay for the euro owners.

Rubbish one.

I purchased our Touareg insurance wty from Tristram (note, didnt buy the car from them). RRP $2800, i paid $2200 by bending their arm. 3 years, $10k max claim, factory service intervals (ie 15k not 5k servcies), $100 excess (or was it $150, but certainly no more), and covers 99% of things including stereo etc.

CCS have a similar one, slightly cheaper but only 2 years.

I can recommend both. Both CCS and Tristram have stood behind it and made it work in terms of claims elgibility and also paperwork. Essentually i turn up, pay the excess, thats it. In return i always service with them.

I can also strongly recommend a mechancial warranty on the euro cars full stop. In 10 year of taking them out, i've always made on it, sometimes by a factor of 10x plus returns (my A4 did a turbo, manifold and a number of small but expensive things).

Would a mechanical warranty also depend on the age of the vehicle? i.e. not as much cover for older models??

Not sure on any age limitations. Havn't ever noticed that.

I know they have 3x different plans. The plans get lower forms of cover, but also cheaper prices as you go down.
They do limit the best Plantium plan to cars under 125kms, Gold to 175kms, and not sure on Silver.

DriveRight Extended warranty (IAG) have 3 levels, $100 excess, $250 excess, and Euro ($500 excess). Also, went to their website and they have Supreme, Executive, and Express, depending on age and mileage. I might look around for other options. :)

CCS has put one on my old RS4 (for the new owner, mate of mine) at 10 years old.
I believe CCS and Tristram use MotorPlus as their provider.
