ECU Safe "Protected" Jump Starting - Learnt a lesson
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:05:26 PM »
Well it would appear that perhaps the ploy of ECU safe jumper leads isn't so much of a ploy as I discovered the other day.

My TDI passat isnt Chiptuned or anything like that..

But after listening to excessive music and leaving the ignition on all day while working in a shed... The Battery didn't quite have the guts to turn over the donk.

8pm at night and wanting to get home I throw the 12V Jumpstarter on to the battery..

Boom she fires straight in to life..

First thing noticed after disconnecting and jumping in to the cab to drive away. a ever so slight burning smell was evident..

Over the next few days the electronics in the car were playing up more and more!

First culprit was the Steering Column Lock followed by ABS Errors and then the electronic Park break deciding it didnt want to help me any more..

After a bit of diagnosis. I discovered that the Can Gateway had either fried something minor or corrupted itself... Imported a new one from Taiwan for 200 bucks but thats not the point..

Be Carefull when your jumpstarting, and when possible disconnect battery and do a full charge over night to avoid f*ck ups like this!

Did you go negative to negative, or negative to chassis?

More crappy VW electrics.

It is ok to jump start a modern car, what you did wrong i would say is
 1. Own a modern VW.
 2. After the car started you should have left the jump pack on the car for a few mins to allow the alternator to charge the cars battery a bit so that when you pulled the pack off you did not suddenly drop the reference voltage from the packs 12v down to say the 9v that was left in the cars battery. This causes the Alternator to spike and blow weak s**tty VW electronics.

Also did you just have the radio on all day or the actual ignition with the dash lights all going? If so this used to cook the coils in old cars and no doubt can still cook capacitors etc in modern cars that have a charge and release cycle.
