Let's talk tyres
« on: January 25, 2012, 03:53:42 PM »
right, so i currently have 17" monza alloys wrapped in 225/45/17 tyres.

general feedback from the commander is that the ride is very stiff and bumpy.

tyres are currently bridgestone potenza re050a - which i'm told are performance tyres which may explain the stiffness. I really like the look of the monzas so keeping the wheels is ideal, what tyres would you recommend for a more comfortable ride?

otherwise the 15" nana wheels will return..  ;D

I have Bridgestone Turanza ER300s on my Golf 235/45/17 which are nice and compliant.  I noticed no real change in ride comfort going from 16s to 17s.  Road noise is reduced but that could just be going from worn tyres to newer ones...

Personally, I don't think it would change too much changing tyres. Only way is changing suspension / or going to smaller wheels. Or can you go higher profile? I went from 45 to 50 recently on my 16" Monzas (Denver) and have noticed huge change in comfort.

I will be keen to buy your wheel / tyre combo off if you do want to part them, as I am thinking of getting a Golf GTI shagged wheels.

Cheers

sidewall stiffness is typically the main cause of ride harshness in a tyre.
try looking for one that is more flexible.

or as polo gti mentioned, you could always increase profile size. this would of course affect the rolling radius and all your measurements/speedo would be off.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys

So if i increase the tyre profile to 50 (can you get 225/50/17 ?)

or

Find a less sporty tyre (any suggestions?) we do a lot of open road driving (avg 20,000km's a year) so comfort and safety are my main requirements.

@Polo_gti, yeah that is an option and I may just look for smaller 16" wheels, the rims themselves are not that great condition-wise, but not too bad either. Tyres will need replacing fairly soon. Can send you photos if you like.

I just got Potenza RE002s in a similar size for a long road trip over the holidays. Very soft and quiet (and cheapish), but I'm comparing to the Hankook RS2 'track' tyres that came off. My suspension is very firm H&R: tyres make a huge difference

You dont want to go up in profile , 225/50R17 is not the way to go.
What pressure are you running in the bridgestones?
You could lower it to 34 but i wouldnt go lower.

Failing that go to 16's

I've been running 35-37 on long drives, usually 33 during city driving, this is as the handbook states...

We;; try 30 then, but not lower.
The bridgestones do have a firmish ride.

On our A4 we went from 225/45 17 Goodyear GDS3 to 225/40 18 Toyo T1Rs and the Toyos are much more comfortable to ride on and not a bad tyre for the money.

Thanks will try lower settings.

Will this compromise  the grip and wear of the tyres as i'd basically be running them underinflated?

As for replacements, what would be a softer option of brand/model?

Otherwise, anyone have any 16" rims they want to sell?

30 is ok , the car is not heavy on those size tyres and they will be extra load rated as well. You will not damage them at 30, but keep and eye on the wear just in case.
Would look at continentals maybe, or the new michelin pilot sport 3 or supersport. Depends on budget.

My pilot sport 3s, even on the weitec coilovers, have a pretty good ride. I'm very pleased with them!
