Crafer Farms sale
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:30:22 PM »
I see on Xtra this morning that the National led Government has approved the sale of the Crafer Farms to the Chinese.

I hope all those who voted for this Government are satisfied ...... or will you only be satisfied once they have sold the whole country to overseas interests?

Ummm, very satisfied, its not the government selling these farms, its a sale by private owners. Why shouldn't it be approved. Is your beef that we should sell to countries other than the Chinese, or that private asset holders shouldn't be allowed to sell to whoever they like.

Its a global economy now, and we pretty much don't "own" anything anymore given the mountain of debt (private and public) created by consumer spending and the bloated welfare system.

As long as we make the new owners pay there tax and follow our country's economic and environmental laws (if there are any :P).
Then I'm with DTM.
It would be hypocritical if the government didn't approve it. Its a legal sale to the highest bidder by the sounds.

Don't have a problem with it, it failed miserably in Kiwi hands so maybe the Chinese will make a good go of it.

hard to argue with selling for the best price but it is a sensitive subject.

the govt should've bought it and leased it indefinitely to the chinese.

or allowed it in exchange for the same percentage of the country in china... ;)

The age of patriotism is dead. We can't stop countries we owe millions of dollars to buying our assets if they are privately up for sale.

If it means cheaper milk for NZer's then im all for it (so long as there is no melamine added of course)

if it turns out all the product and profits are going offshore and no further investment is made in the country, or in the aim of decreasing the cost of milk, not happy!

So, as stated on One news 360,000 ha of land have been approved by the OIC in the last 2 years, of which 800ha (yes thats only 0.2 of a percent) were to the Chinese. Seems clear that the banging on by the media and others about this (and not all the other approvals) is driven by xenophobia, or in Michael Fays case that he's pissed off he missed out on taking a cut on the way through.

Winnie Peters must be stirring this up in the background  ;)

I don't have a problem with it either, I'm with BB and KiwiDTM here

the govt should've bought it and leased it indefinitely to the chinese.

Yeah, then next time someone has an "important" piece of property for sale, they can just get a Chinese mate to put in a ridiculously high offer, then lobby the govt to pay the same price to stop NZ property ownership going offshore  ::)

Apparently according to close up tonight the sale HAD to go through because of legislation that the Labour government put through....
