Euro plate legality.
« on: January 31, 2012, 08:22:46 AM »
So, I remember quite a bit of discussion around this, but trawling through the archives I couldn't find what I really wanted to know. Do I have to shell out $500 on a euro plate from plates.co.nz or can I go the unbelievably cheaper route with say autoplates.com. Will the plod want to make my life hell for doing so?

Yes  :police:
With the new camera vans checking wof, rego and disqualified drivers the Po Po are being extra vigilant on plates.
I have a dirty plate on the back of my car and not the front, as yet i havent been pulled for it but then i only drive the car on a weekend (if she's lucky)
Only a matter of time
I always carry the "true" plate in the boot too

When you get stopped they will confiscate the illegal plate as well, not just tell you to change it.

Im pretty sure you get demerit points for having euro plate now ( the illegal one) so not worth the risk really as a fine doesent really deter people

25 demerits and a $200 fine each time they get you. The official reasoning is that your real plates could be used on another car for doing crime or something.

So if I get Euro plates they take my originals? Are there any other options to buy from? Anyone selling a set? Doesn't need to be a PP or anything, in fact I'd rather it wasn't, just don't want to get demerits for it!

No other option apart from purchasing off plates.co.nz
OR, you could purchase a secondhand plate off Trademe.

Bugger, been looking at TM but I've only spotted PP's. Might have to bite the bullet...

can you just get your 'normal' plate re-issued?  or is that even more $$?

(and how do you go about getting a normal plate?  VTNZ?)

Yea, 400 bones to have my standard plate turned into a euro. Or US$29.95 for an 'illegal' one.

just rung up VTNZ about options

they'd never heard of these foreign plates

but the only option from them is to get a new plate (new number) issued for the car

not sure if I'm keen on that.

anyone know how much that costs (I asked him, but he was still a bit star struck about the fact these illegal plates are out there)

^ You just type in your existing plate number, click on the 'already my plate' tab when prompted, and elect the euro option down the bottom.

Never ceases to amaze me how little VTNZ know about their own back yard!

Edit: think I might have missed what you were asking, are you wanting to de-euro your plate?

I believe you can get your euro plates remade, keeping your existing rego numbers, you just have to send the old set back once the new set gets sent to you.

It can be done directly thru licensys
