I took all of a week to get used to giving way to the right when turning right.  It ain't that hard.

What IS hard is switching between driving between Australia and New Zealand and remembering when to give way or not!

In saying that, learning to give way to the right when turning left in NZ has helped me gain more awareness of traffic on the road when I turn left in Australia.  I always look in case someone hasn't spotted me and decided to turn into me.  It's saved my panels a few times now.

It took me about 4 years to get used to the NZ system.

AKA - watch out, they ARE out to get you!  >:(

It seems to be bringing it back to the old 'give way when turning right' rule for all intersections?

The speeding up and slowing down thing on the open road is annoying. I will overtake people when I want to make progress but passing lanes are the safest place to do that. Stopping people from passing you in passing lanes is stupid, just winds people up, and encourages overtaking in less safe places, or forces you to do 120+ to overtake, which can get expensive :)

COOL I for one am so glad they have realized how utterly retarded the old law was.

There will be no crashes as most of the time people have to watch what they are doing so much to do the original law they will be used to watching everything before moving.
You just won't have assholes flying across traffic when you think they won't have time, but they decide they do.
Or dumbos who sit not turning left because someone miles away is deciding whether they can make a turn or not.
And late indicators flying across you acting as tho you are the one at fault.
And people who stupidly indicate early to go into a drive way just after a road and some one pulls in front of them.
And people pulling in front of motorcyclists and others who have forgotten to turn their indicators off.
I refuse to use the indicators on my scooter, I use hand signals or I give way period.
Indicators can be a hazard rather than a help often.

As for the last diagram nobody pulls out in that circumstance even now as its so unnatural.

Thank god they have finally come to there senses.

Oh man I was hoping I would start some heated debate here >:D

The only time I can see the new law not working so well is if you have a line of traffic moving slowly and somebody stops to let somebody across the traffic to turn right and there was somebody else behind the stopped guy who crept around and went to turn left and didn't see that the guy turning right was coming as they had right of way and didn't look properly.
This could be made worse if it was a truck or van giving way and the left turner couldn't see that well.
But this can exist with the current law its just that people who are turning left at the moment are more tuned into looking to their right first.

 So one to watch for.

So really?
Nobody is up for a good argument on this?

What I think will be a problem is grumpy drivers who will have no problem using the new law will be waving fists and honking at the "cautious" drivers who will still pause before they do there left turn.

Incidentally how many of us have ever actually followed that last diagram and stopped before turning right to let a waiting right turning car out of a side street? As per the old law.
And truthfully how many people didn't even know this was the law?

IIRC, it was only if there were no give way or stop signs and the roads didn't have centre lines, so the 'give way to the right when turning right' would apply - I would treat it as the vehicle on the through road had priority and, TBH, as far as I recall, so did everyone else.

However, I used to do a lot of trials in the local car clubs and they had a defined way of establishing road priorities.

That's why that last part of the law was so stupid as you would be driving down the road wanting to turn right and a car would come up to the end of the side road indicating a right turn also so you would then have to try and look at the road to see if they were on a give way or a stop sign ::)

In reality tho you would have to be an absolute ass to pull out in that situation though even if you knew you did have the right of way.

It is slightly odd tho that Big bumper says the new law indicated that you give way to the right if turning right......where in the new law you now wouldn't in that one situation.
Sooooo things are not always so convenient when you want them to be but even still they make more sense.

Even worse when you were supposed to pull over to the left before making your turn to the right...

Much better to do this on the open road than stopping in the middle with cars coming up from behind at 100kph which is why I still pull to the left and only turn when both ways are free
