Volkswagen has released new information about the MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform that will be used on the next-generation Golf and Audi A3.
Described as a "long term" architecture, the platform is flexible enough to underpin vehicles as small as the Polo and as large as the Passat. More importantly, the company said these models could - in theory - be built on the same production line. This will enable Volkswagen to produce more high-volume and niche vehicles at reduced costs.
Volkswagen has also confirmed a new four-cylinder petrol - dubbed the EA211 series - which produces 60 PS (44 kW) to 150 PS (110 kW) and has cylinder-deactivation technology. On the diesel side, there's a new EA288 engine family which churns out 90 PS (66 kW) to 190 PS (140 kW).
