If they have a twin top link set up and a bolt rather than a nut on the CV like a Passat and many modern VAGs they are pretty easy.
Just get a cheap boot from Partmaster you don't need an expensive one with all the fancy bolts and stuff.

If the CV doesn't come off (after checking if external or internal clip) with 3 good whacks then get a stretch boot and borrow your mates stretchy tool...well that's what I do.
If it wasn't clicking on corners etc the cv should e ok and maybe even stop any noise with a boot and new grease.....if your really on a budget.

although on a budget i always do things properly with the car and not generally on the cheap, if i can do it myself i will but if its going to be a pain i will get it done? its an 07 car if that has any influence the type of cv.

I was suggesting you do it properly, if its leaking grease its a boot.
If its clattering its a CV.
The Partmaster boot is a good boot it just costs less. No pile of unneeded nuts and bolts. The Genuine kits are over $100 I think. Up to you if you want that.
I wouldn't find it a pain to do it but I'm a mechanic.
Being 07 it probably has a bolt and a short CV so they are quite easy to do I find, You undo the CV bolt then the top long bolt and free the two top arms (use CRC spray) then swing the CV out where you can whack it off and away you go. :)

On the Golf all you need to do is undo the track rod end, hub nut and the three nuts on the bottom ball joint  and swing the drive shaft out. Some of the Mk5 outer joints can be a real mission to get off and there is special puller VW list but there seems to be no way of telling how easy it is going to be until you try  ::) We have used a slide hammer before now and its still taken quite a bit of effort to get off and yet others have just knocked off. If you find it too hard to get off the other option is a stretchy boot.

BB I think you are thinking of the Passat/A4 suspension set up the Golfs is not multi link.

I am speaking of the Passat/A4 set up.
I thought they would all have gone multi link as it is very good for the steering geometry, well seems to do interesting things anyway.
