Polo GTI (year 2000 - Mk3 - 6n2 ) or Golf GTi MK4?

Hi all,

I am new to VW's and at present are looking to purchase one for my partner and I.

Thus far, I have spent the best part of a day or two researching the Polo GTI (1600cc) and Golf Gti 1800 turbo. (hopefully I have described the models correctly)

I am somewhat confused and stumped as to what to do now after doing some extensive research and subsequently are seeking some advice.

We would like to go with the Polo as its more economical, does not have a turbo which has a limited life span on its own and I think it would be a fun car to take out to a track day.

But, here is the big but........

The Duu gearbox - what's the deal with this, I have read and read and it appears these things blow up. Now, I can handle rebuilding the gearbox at a cost, but not if its going to go and blow up on me again after another 65ks.

Can anyone let me know if this Duu box has been over hyped and its only half as bad as you read about, and if you rebuild it can you strengthen it so that the same fault (5 gear plastic syncro?) does not eventuate again?

Lots of questions here, but can anyone advise what dollar figures am I looking at?

Sorry for the questions, but the reality here is that we have money to spend and we don't want to make the mistake and purchase a ticking time bomb.

Are we best to go with the Golf GTI and spend a wee bit extra on fuel and accept its own faults which I understand are not as bad as the Polo gearbox fault?

wow - no one replied.  For others struggling with the same choice:

the polo gearboxes don't just blow up.  They are not as strong as a standard-normal gearbox as they really have just
carried these old gearboxes over from previous models when they were driven by smaller engines from previous polo's. 
Lots of polo's out there have original and working gearboxes (my guess). 

The mk4 golf now is getting on.  For tuning get it.  Er.. If you can find a polo with non-crunching gearbox get it I'd say.  More economical.
Probably a hoot to drive too. (my guess again).
