The autos are rubbish from all accounts, so the manual is the only way to go but the spec is all wrong for the potential buyers, who do the think are going to buy them, Audi drivers?

steel wheels and cloth seats would get it closer to the target price, apparently the autos are a mechatronic single clutch device, slow changes unlike the DSG

Yeah, just an automated manual in reality, apparently OK on the open road but jerky around town and manouvering, just when a proper auto would be at its best.
As you say, steel wheels, cloth interior, manual transmission and they would be heading in the right direction. No sat nav or any other gizmos unrealated to actual driving would be a bonus

thing is they'd need a decent auto and aircon to compete even in the basic market

Aircon is probably needed altho in saying that I don't use mine that much, decent auto, maybe but I would be happy with a manual.
Probably a Skoda would suit me more, they look better as well

Last night on Oteha Valley Rd a really nice looking Mk1 Golf Cabbly. Was a dark color, maybe black or dark blue and has some deep wheels. Couldn't make out much more as it was the middle of the night.
Bought not built.
