Hi there!

I'm new to forum as I've just landed this one, 1977 golf GTI mk1 UK spec. Body is rusted through and looking actively for a donor shell. Any leads would be welcome!

I know this car from the late 1990's. It is quite an interesting car.

Would be good to get them all in one place for a photo shoot..  currently in 4 sheds and a 1000 k round trip to visit them

Awesome! Just how bad is that body?

Hi Shifty

Pretty bad, it's rotten through and not salvageable. I'll need a complete body to start fresh off. I've been chasing some leads but nothing so far. Though I'd just try here to see if anyone knows a body sitting somewhere waiting for new life :)

Hi RS Zwei

It's been in NZ for a while, the car has history....my wife actually spent her teenage years driving round in this very car with her friend back in the day.

Yup!

Its an interesting car.
ExUk imported by Anne. There has been a cock up and its been registered as a 1987 which I think its a 1977. I think it might be a 1977? Also, it could be a Richard Lloyd racing conversion, I think they did the conversion from LHD to RHD before the factory started doing in in 1978 - hence why the wipers go the wrong way on your car. Its had some 1980's aftermarket bodykit on it, and had its steel bumpers updated to the later plastic ones - this was done in the UK.
Im pretty sure those wheels were the original wheels off my Mk1 GTI.

Correct on all counts, I've also checked the chassis number with the help of a fellow member dave, and confirmed this is in fact a 77. It was converted from LHD to RHD and the bodykit has since been removed. It was also turbo'd at some stage and removed. The bottom block is Audi80 I think from what I've been told. The wheels was swapped a few times, not sure where those one's came from. The engine still turned round 5 years ago and they said it goes like stink, but it's in pretty bad shape atm. I haven't pulled anything apart since the body is really bad and don't want to proceed until I know for sure what to do. I'm looking for a donor car, but from what I've heard it's not going to be easy.

I'm going to get some expert advice on the body, as that's my main concern. The interior and mechanics I'm not too worried about.

Cheers.

Yes I'm happy with it. My goal was to make it look 'well cared for' rather than 'restored' and I think I've achieved that.  Now I can focus on brakes and then the fun stuff under the bonnet.  ;D

Looking like this now with Rays / Centra 3 pieces and H&R coilovers.

Here is my old mk1. Was running 1.8t AGU with all the gubbins. Great car, wish I hadn't sold it :(
