The NZ version was down on power, the same as the Oz version, for their ADR regs - 170hp vs 200

The quad look is attractive for sure, but the classic JDM look is, er, well, classic!

When released in 1995 the DC2 Type R JDM version had the highest specific power output (HP/L) of ANY production NA engine "in the world" (said in the Clarkson way...) - higher than any Ferrari. The S2000 engine exceeded that when it was released, with 240HP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_F20C_engine).
Amazingly, for such a high revving engine (you change DOWN a gear when you drop below 6000rpm to keep the car on the high cams), it's a long stroke engine, and the piston speeds at the redline were as high as F1 engines of the time. AND it's incredibly long living - not your so-called Jap handgrenade - my B18C ran for 9 years throuhgh 5 years of Targa, numerous car club events and 3 years of Taranaki Rally, without being touched, in factory standard form.

It's only weakness? No torque - drive it on the top cams and it's an exhilarating drive - instant urge on throttle input and that noise! :) :)

The car was produced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Honda's first F1 GP win, in the Mexico GP in 1965, driven by Richie Ginther. That car was Championship White in colour, hence the significance of having an original DC2 in that colour.

My '96 example has done only 85,000kms. The bonnet has been replaced as the original (in these pics) had been damaged and poorly repaired. It also has a full Mugen exhaust from headers through to twin loop muffler - the only non-factory item on the car.

thanks for that,

rummaging through some honda stuff i've accumulated over the years, i found a photocopy of the original honda nz itr release material.

141kw/178nm, 5-speed cr, lsd, 1087kg,
15in wheels
a/c optional, 4 colour choices - black, yellow, red, white,
$40k in 2000

the 170bhp you mentioned was the output for the tamer nz integra vti-r.

a bit puzzled about the long stroke, it's actually shorter stroke than a non-vtec b18.

agree about the exhilaration of revving a good motor out.
it's a totally different experience to a modern turbo with its big dollops of torque from low down.
no hardship on a good honda either, the company has produced some sublime drivetrains.

This looks like a pretty good source of info.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_B_engine

Looks like the Oz NZ cars had the B18C 7 engine with 196hp(146kw), whereas the JDM B18C Type R engine had 199hp(148kw), i.e. bugger all difference. The 98 spec JDM had 1hp more and a little more torque, but gear ratio changes made performance pretty much identical.

The long stroke (under-square)  reference I thought just referred to the fact that an engine has a longer stroke than bore diameter and is usually associated with an engine that revs lower but has more torque. The B18CR/5/7 engines turned this concept on it's head..

I thought undersquare means the stroke  is less than bore, not as stated above

all i know is long strokers are not usually high revvers.

Exactly. That's what makes the B18C so unique. And accounts for the F1-like piston speeds. Makes the longevity of the engine an even greater feat of engineering and quality.

Like the fact that the styling is evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

But like most new sporting versions too much fussy detailing for my liking - but not as OTT as the Civic Type R

4 doors will make it an option for more buyers, but I prefer the 2 door look.

Still has the option of a 6 speed manual AFAIK, and that's a no-brainer.

I'm sure it'll handle brilliantly.

Its ok, a bit over the top in the styling department. Everything seems cartoonish stylingwise these days. Why do we need massive exhaust pipes and fake solid plastic air vents?
