brian;
those red bands are polarising - people like or dislike.
being french the whole outer rim is painted red then a fine black stripe is applied on top.

vive la france !

;D

always had a fondness for the megane 2.
tremendous to drive, esp the r26.
and much, much easier to see out of compared to the later meganes.

expectations confirmed  ;)

i quite like the radio stalk, it works on touch so read the manual first !

it has meant the paddleshifters for dct cars have to be placed awkwardly high.

looks like tinypic has gone tits up.
they are telling ex-tiny piccers to go to photobucket - stuff that !
went to tiny pic to escape photobucket, only to find they own tinypic   :(

while visiting my "local" renault dealer (napier !) i got the opportunity to drive the latest RS280 (with EDC dual clutch gearbox).

it is big, well built, comfortable.
not a fan of the multi page menus on the touchscreen, best accessed while stationary.
in RS mode the motor sounds nice. there's a nice burble and crackle from the exhaust.
the EDC works better than any DSG i've used, shifts up and down are crisp and immediate, ratios are well spaced.

the brembo brakes are strong but a bit lifeless, they feel like stepping on a block of wood, reminds me of brembo equipped subaru sti's.

handling is  a weak point.
the steering is dull and lifeless, turn-in is numb, partly due to the open diff, test car was on sport suspension not the sharper cup chassis.
the four wheel steer is a waste of time, it makes the car feel unpredictable in response.

overall the new RS is a compelling alternative to a golf gti but falls short of replacing the old rs265/275 as a fun hot hatch.

that may change with news that the more aggressive trophy version will be coming to nz.

ps...

i also drove a hyundai i30n.
this is a worthy successor to the old rs265.
the chassis is well sorted and responsive, the motor sounds good, the manual gearbox is sweet to use.
it's sabotaged by uneven weighting across the 3 pedals, confusing setup menus with too many options and excess weight.
it's quick and nice to drive but you feel every one of the 1500kgs.

Filx

I wonder if a 50kg diet will make the difference for the i30N? https://www.motor1.com/news/369841/hyundai-i30-n-project-c/ Interesting that article claims they saved 22kg just in swapping the wheels to light weight ones.

I don't think I updated this post. Sadly on the 3rd March my Megane R26 got written off. I was rear-ended by a 2016 Indian Chief motorbike in a 100km/h zone.

Ive replaced the R26 with a Megane RS265 Redbull RB8.
