I noticed there are 2 AE86's in the NZ Targa at the moment. One has a Lexus V8 conversion!!. Would be some good competition. 1uzfe vs 4agze!!!

I must be the only person that doesn't know toyota engine codes.

lol!
I only know Toyota engine codes because my brother is into his Toyotas and is a member of the Toyspeed club.
Id say that Toyota V8 engine would make the coupe handle like crap, safer with either the ZE engine or a Blacktop 20V.

Beeker, have you thought of doing the Targa Tour in you RS4?

A well set up AE86 Carollas are brillaint rally cars but can be highly strung to be fast. The motors tend to require a lot of maintainence,(the nonsupercharged ones anyway).

I have friends who rally these things on gravel and are consistently spending big money on motor, gearbox and diff. They have to be very well set up to be quick all the hp in the world is useless if you cant use it.

One of the AE86s on the 2004 Targa was very well set up and very quick and getting a huge ammount of servicing everynight. Probably 4-5 hours per night with 3 people hanging out of it (not really sure what they were doing)

If you want to do Targa (for fun) there is one simple rule KEEP IT SIMPLE. You want to be able to replace anything with ease i.e standard parts where practical.

You dont need huge hp, far better off with handling and brakes. There were a couple of guys on last targa in an old Datsun 120Y with a few mods and all safety gear. From memory the car owed them $5k,( not bad when seats, belts, cage etc are going to be most of that.) These guys had a ball and learned a lot. The car got bent but they finished and didnt tip $15k down the toilet

We have done five targas, 4 with a Mk1 GTi and 1 with a Toyota Carolla GT2004 (215hp, 6 speed, proflex suspension etc.etc.etc..) and the Golf would 1-2secs per km faster Carolla. (Golf finished 11th or 12th outright back in the good old days.)

For 4 Targas the only thing we have ever done to golf was replace 1 front axle (blown CV) 1 set rear brake shoes and pour petrol.

Qualitat gave us a complete axle free and brake shoes from BNT, simple.

The particular car is a AE85 with a AE86 rear axle on it. Its got a stock Supercharged engine from a Mid 90's ~corolla. I'm wondering what the service requirments on that motor would be ?

If the motor is standard then no worries with servicing the motor what I mean is things like if you bend a rear axle does a std AE86 one bolt straight in or does it need modified to fit, in case of the clutch letting go can a standard one be put in etc etc.

There would be nothing worse than bending the rear end on the prologue and having to pull out of the event.

What about this one?

That would take alot of effort to get it back to a road legal status.

The best things about the Sentra is that the avaliblity of parts, and its one of those cars that you can turn the key and go racing.

I agree with that!!. Parts would be a lot easier to find being Japanese. And you will need parts!!

Congratulations on getting that (I assume you mean the AE85, or did you get the Sentra?).
Would be good to see it towed to the next VASK track day behind the RS4.
Will you be changing your avatar to something like this?:

Beeker, when do you pick the car up?

Is your plan to enter the Targa Tuaranga this year?

When you are after more power, bin the supercharger for a turbo and get a 20V head, then you should be able to get 200KW out of it.
